Streetview-O

Postby Midlands Planner on Fri Apr 23, 2010 7:34 am

Following an idea from an early Streetview event in Milan, and as an unashamed attempt to get some publicity for the six urban races in Leicestershire :D , we have produced what what we believe may be the first Google Streetview-O event in the UK?

Visit http://www.leioc.org.uk and click on the thumbnail image on news item to see the full size map complete with full instructions of how and where to enter the competition.

The closing date for the competition is Sunday 9th May and winners and answers will be announced at the Markfield Urban Summer League event on 11th May and on the Leicestershire OC website.

Good luck

I think the Italian event was just that - an event, with a mass start time. Yours is a (semi)permanent course, rather than an event. But anyway, it looks like fun...

You are correct. The Italian event was released at a set time. I found some of the clues quite difficult and left the race till the morning and so did rather poorly (no change there then!)

For those who want to have a go at that event; it is still online at http://www.remmaps.it/rsrc/streetview/index_en.htm

and there is another at Bergen in Norway: -

But as you say - looks like fun

Done the Ibstock one. It's good fun to do once, but being able to jump from control to control rather spoils it. I thought that If someone could write an app forcing the user to stay in streetview and navigate the controls in sequence using the O map, that would make it really interesting - especially if timed.

Then I looked at the Norwegian one and found that somebody has written exactly this application, apart I think from the timing. But it doesn't really work as Google haven't photographed all the roads and alleys on the map, so you navigate to one end of the passage you want to "run" up, and then find you have to go back. So the O map would need to be adapted to show as passable only those roads which Google had actually sent their camera down.

Edit: for the previous paragraph, I was trying to navigate using the streetview arrows. I've now discovered that you can jump straight to a control by double-clicking on the O map - but this seems pointless as no navigation is required.

Live UK Streetview-O Competition

Postby Midlands Planner on Thu Jun 10, 2010 8:39 am

The second UK Streetview-O competition will go live this Sunday at 7.30pm.

The major development is that this Summers Streetview-O is a timed competition. A link to the (new) map and clues at the start time will be posted on this forum, when it will also be announced on the Leicestershire Orienteering Clubs website.

The feedback from the last competition has been used to develop the Streetview-O; so it is much harder than the first one and will require deduction and reasoning

For those who were content with the look and feel of the first competition, a simpler version of the same Streetview-O will be available one week later :D

If you would like to practice the concept of Streetview-O here are a few resources: -

How to use Streetview http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/help/maps/streetview/
Milan – the first Streetview-O competition http://www.remmaps.it/rsrc/streetview/index_en.htm
Bergen Streetview-O: -http://news.worldofo.com/2010/02/14/str ... -map-cool/
Ibstock – the first UK Streetview-O competition: - http://www.leioc.org.uk

We hope you find time to take part, and, as always, we welcome feedback and comments.
