There was talk of WOC selection races being in Oban on 15/16 May.
Anyone know if they're still happening, and open to all as in previous years?
Thanks

Re: WOC selection races
They are happening then as far as I know. At least they are in the fixtures list as Glasgow Park on Friday for sprint, Ardnaskie on Saturday for Middle, Creag Mhic on Sunday for Long (last two near Oban). I would imagine they will be open to all (bit odd to have selection for selction races?!), although they primarily are for WOC selection so don't expect anything other than the WOC selection courses (~15km for men on Sunday?). They are usually relatively low key so I'm not surprised entries haven't opened yet (previous years there has been an announcement on BOF website when they open).
There is also a SOL on the Sunday on the other side of Scotland too (nr. Dundee). I gather some in Scotland are a bit unhappy that the WOC Selections have been arranged after the SOL was arranged, on the same date, and on what is probably better terrain, thus tempting some away from the SOL....

AFAIK it hasn't been announced which Glasgow park yet - does anyone know any more?Duncan wrote:Glasgow Park
Apparently it's only 75% of the full distance due to the proximity to the European Champs. As Creag Mhic is pretty heavy going anyway, I'd guess at more like 10-11km?Duncan wrote:(~15km for men on Sunday?).

Aye it was embargoed, but I've heard from various people that it's not there.

I was a bit surprised at the SOL clash, I'm not sure I'll be running by this date but if I am I'll prob be out west..

Thanks for the replies. Hmm, doesn't sound massively definite all this.
I'll wait for an official invitation which surely will be forthcoming soon given it's in less than 4 weeks..

As the organiser of the said SOL near Dundee, I would like to put it on record that tonight is the first time I've heard of this fixture clash.
I am absolutely astonished and, I have to say, furious at learning of this clash via Nopesport, and apologise to all of you who are faced with making a choice between our event and what sounds like an excellent alternative on the West Coast.

Looking at the start list for the Dalbeattie SOL this weekend, I can't see the WOC selection races taking (m)any people away.

Sure - I'd be the last to presume that our SOL would feature heavily in elites' schedules, though it would be nice for as many people as possible to experience a new area

What rankles is the way in which we have discovered the presence of another high quality event in Scotland on the same day, never mind the potential that it has for attracting away people who are not necessarily selection candidates but who might decide to participate (or help) at Creag Mhic rather than come to Balkello.

Re: WOC selection races
better preparation and discussion between WOC test race organisers with the SOA/SOL people = 1 event rather than 2 which means everyone is happy. If it is in fact 75% as Rocky says that's even better, 21L distances anyway!

Re: WOC selection races
obviously been a breakdown in communication somewhere..but the WOC selection races have been fixed for those dates (and areas, saving it's Erskine not Mugdock) for months:
IC minutes for 9/12/09 http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/d ... _12_09.pdf say:
"WOC Selection races are being held in Scotland – 14th – 16th May 2010
Sprint – Glasgow
Middle – Ardnaskie
Long – Creag Mhic
Athletes have been informed and areas are embargoed. Planners for each race and a local controller have been approached. Permissions for Oban areas sorted and Lorna Eades is liaising with the 2011 Scottish 6-day...Two local clubs (CLYDE and ECKO) have also been approached for on the day assistance."

Re: WOC selection races
Really sad to me as I'd want to go to both. Presumably having the lkes of me at the selection races would help defray costs for BOF. I suspect my loyalty towards the SOA will win out, but I might even manage 2 and 1.
