Snow for Christmas
Sorry for mentioning the "C" word, but I've just noticed that weather forecasters were warning of the "threat" of snow between now and Christmas. Am, I the only person who regards snow as a pleasure not a threat? Too much may cause problems for O events with roads or car-parks blocked with the stuff but running in snow is and has always been one of the most pleasurable ways to orienteer for me - particularly at night!

Re: Snow for Christmas
Snow means you can run at night without a torch and brings all those golf courses into play. Snow is the best.
Provides a merciful break from winter training runs on the streets.

Re: Snow for Christmas
The only trouble with snow while orienteering is it reveals other people's attack points rather too well and makes it rather too easy for late comers.
I remember planning an event at Blagdon a couple of years ago when the whole area was covered overnight but we still went ahead and good fun was had by all -no injuries apart from the risk of frostbite to the people who ran in T-shirts.

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Western and central parts of the UK will stay dry with clear or sunny spells. It will be cold with some overnight fog and frost. Eastern areas as well as Northern Scotland will be cloudy with rain at times, which may fall as snow over hills. Temperatures mostly cold but the north of Scotland will be windy with near normal temperatures. From Friday (18th) until Sunday (20th) many northern and eastern parts will continue cloudy with rain or sleet at times, but perhaps some snow over hills. Further south and west, drier and brighter but with a risk of rain, sleet or snow spreading from the east . Windy around coasts and feeling very cold with overnight frost. From Monday (21st) until Christmas Day little change is expected.
Yes, when adults see snow they just want to be children and run around in it. Orienteering is the perfect excuse.
Also if any snow falls on London it's a great excuse to escape endless news stories about "The Big Freeze/New Ice Age" blah blah.

no - snow flattens bracken freshens ground etc.... so it's good news unless .....you are looking for white tape to lay/check controls in a blizzard then it's not a pleasure but a threat
hop fat boy, hop!

when it snowed in feb (just after exams - even better timing!) we went and did a windows exercise in Eccy Woods. The map matched the ground as most of it was blank white!

Re: Snow for Christmas
The weather forecast is currently predicting light snow for Thursday's Kent Night Cup at Knole Park.
Walking distance from Sevenoaks station for those interested in travelling up from London. ... ahhh, half a centimetre might be too much for South East trains.

So Sheffield people what's it like up there now - I have to do the epic Mother Christmas double pick up tomorrow - do I need to bring my snow chains?

Gutted. Stuck at home with a stinky cold when I should be at the event, and can see the snow falling outside.

At least you'll have a red nose as is seasonal

Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

Re: Snow for Christmas
Sheffield is nice and easy, as long as you don't drive on the pavements too much! - Mrs. H should be able to see ShUOC-and-AWE collect a 5-0 walkover when our opposition (as expected) don't turn up.
I'm more worried about some eeigit removing themselves from the gene pool (Darwin awards stylee) on Snake/Hathersage Road meaning getting home is an absolute pain.
(although the Hallam half of my mum's Sheffield double pick up is already safely ensconced back on t'other side of the pennines as she doesn't do a course that goes the whole hog

Lovely event in Knole Park, Sevenoaks - about 40 hardy souls competed. Bit difficult to see the flags in the driving snow! Hope eveyone got home from the Xmas meal held afterwards in a nearby pub. It took me 3 hours for about 10 miles and the snow was coming down thick and fast.

Re: Snow for Christmas
The Military Challenge mountain bike event tomorrow could be challenging in these conditions. I wonder how many times I'll come off my bike

Re: Snow for Christmas
Elland Park Woods on Sunday could be very interesting. Steep and slippy at the best of times. Remember a fixed rope on one leg on my first visit - at night!
Buck Wood tomorrow should be a fine snowy scamper.
At least there's a nice gentle inter-(running)club cross country race at Temple Newsam on Sunday to compensate if Elland is cancelled. I hope not.
