Given the strength of junior and Uni orienteering in the UK I felt that these job openings and Uni. exchange opps would be of interest to the NopeSport online O community.
Golden Horseshoe Orienteering seeks applications for two part-time jobs (or combine as a full-time job) as Jr. Program Co-ordinator and Cartographer. Both jobs take place in Hamilton, Ontario (70km west of Toronto). Hamilton has a rich running and orienteering history and was the birthplace of road racing in North America, the British Empire Games (now Commonwealth Games) and the first official World Cup in Orienteering outside of Scandinavia. With over 20 forest maps in city limits Hamilton offers excellent orienteering training opportunities. McMaster University, currently ranked #6 in Canada, is located on the edge of the Dundas Valley. McMaster has an exchange program with several UK Universities including Sheffield, Lancaster, and Leeds. Earlier this year Hamilton hosted Tero on his North American tour and a few years ago Holger Hott made Hamilton a training area for a week in preparation for WOC in Denmark. Not interested in these jobs but interested in joining a great training group for a year? Then consider Hamilton and McMaster University.

Non-Canadians with a valid 'working holiday visa' will also be considered for these positions. Salary will be discussed during the interview process.
Students at Leeds, Lancaster, and Sheffield that are interested in an exchange at McMaster University should meet their Uni. Int'l exchange program director. GHO does not facilitate the Uni. exchange.

Assume you still can run right out of MacMU into the botanical gardens and the complex re-entrants of the Botanical Gardens?
Is Dundas Valley still relatively pathless?
And its only what, an hour up to Guelph and its feature-rich moraines?
Yeah, there are some good/great areas around; I assume not enough of them mapped/accessible still?
What is the frequency of events like, it used to be fairly sparse, what with the winter season and all?
Good option for those looking for Scandinavia without the language need.

Perfect, unless of course you are looking for Scandinavia because you want to go orienteering...

Well I wouldn't call Hamilton an alternate to Scandi but I'd say it is among one of the better places to train and race in North America for orienteering. The O season is generally from Sept to May here which links well to the Uni. year (early Sept to late April). Races every 2 weekends in Ontario in winter (no matter what the snowfall) and lots of big races in the NE US (7 hours to WOC'93 terrain and maps) in Oct-Nov and Apr-May.
Yes you can still run directly into the forest beside the McMaster campus on a great trail network on the Royal Botanical Gardens but we no longer have permission to orienteer there.

Dundas Valley has a moderate trail network and is connected by trails to the campus (no need to run on asphalt to access the maps). 10-15 minute jog. No access issues.

40 minutes to the Guelph terrain but only 30 minutes to our limestone terrain (used in 2006 Nor-Am Champs). You can see those maps in this article from Tero's recent training visit here.

Again, Hamilton is not a substitute for Scandi but students that are looking for an international school experience and want to do some great orienteering then McMaster is definately a worthwhile option.
Apparently they enjoyed their recent visit:
