The classic race is at Lossie.
From the event website:
M21E Classic 14.2km
W21E Classic 12.1km
From the BEOC guidelines
M21E winning time to be 85-95mins
W21E winning time to be 60-70mins

Lossie has areas of 5mins/km and areas of 10mins/km and not much in between. I could plan W21E longer than M21E and still get the winning times right.
Looks like the boys will be spending a lot of time in the brashings and green dunes while the girls get to play in the nice bit.
But more likely they messed up.

Have the W21E lengths changed? Last time BEOC was in Scotland target winning times were 90 and 70.

i'll certainly be glad to be running 14km, and that'll be 14km of nice, technical forest. can't remember the last time i had that, so really looking forward to it. however far they are, i'm pretty certain the best people will win. now the question remains how many people are actually making the effort to go???
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

Slight tangent. Why is this age of political correctness are the women's winning times still less than the men's? Particularly as it's proven fact that Women naturallly have better stamina then men?

14.2km sounds great, my personal race will go something like this - first 10km I'll cruise round in approx 70 min, then after that it'll all go to sh*t and I'll do the last 4km in 45-50 minutes. I'd be well happy with 110minutes, ecstatic with 105, but realistically i reckon 115....
reckon the womens could be a km shorter maybe, but blokes about right. haven't run at lossie for ages though.

I think women have better stamina than men but this is only really noticable in serious endurance tests (100km+) - was reading about this recently so will track down the book when i get home.

I think the answer is probably because orienteering isn''t all about endurance, there is a larger strength element than in more endurance based sports such as long distance swimming or road running. Not that I would defend the reasoning - if women want to run the same winning times, then it shouldn't be for us males to say otherwise. But then, I've never been a fan of the longer winning times, and always thought it simply showed more sense!
Incidentally, Gillian, I think I remember reading somewhere that there is evidence to suggest that the crossover between male and female predominance may be as short as marathon distance, and that this is likely to happen sometime relatively soon (but how long I don't know). That surprised me, as I didn't think the female advantages kicked in until fat becomes the primary fuel source, which is too short a time in marathon, but so I gather. Could be complete rubbish though!
