For the active anticar lobby on this thread http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14380367
I think the vehicle the Mayor used could have traversed the marsh easily anyway -trouble is I don't think there would have been a marsh if it had
edited to correct a typo -apologies to Ifor (until he realises and edits as well)

Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Good on the Major, I know I feel like doing some violence when stuff is parked in the cycle lane.
Personal I wish the Police would take some action against cyclists breaking the law, the number of people running red lights or hopping up onto busy pavements as I wait at the lights on my commute in each day really gets me. It's not surprising we have trouble getting respect from motorists.
Here is the best video I have seen for obstructed cycle lanes.

Re: Scottish 6 Days - Day 5
Don't know the details, but I suspect one of the main reasons for the one way might have been so that specific information could be given to locals and they could be requested to travel that day with the flow not against. Even 2 vehicles coming up from Taynuilt when we were departing that way (as requested) added noticable delays. With any real traffic in both directions at the same time there could well have been gridlock and major difficulties form many in making their start times.
Driving extra distance may not be as green, but given the nature of the roads I think the one way system was the right decision.

May I suggest EVERYONE staying at Oban area go direct to Ardchattan from Connel Bridge and save a waste of fuel and money - as this is supposed to be a Green event.
Surely people are capable of parking themselves (as they do every week at their local supermarket), or if parking officials are needed, they must be able to cope with traffic from 2 directions?
May I respectfully suggest everyone ignore your request to mess up the Central Organising Team's carefully-made travel arrangements and as a result potentially damage the reputation and future health of orienteering in the local area?

So, an extra 20 miles, and over 1000 cars - thats at least an extra £2000 in total.

I really hope people don't do as you say. There are reasons that we ask people to travel to an event a certain way. Ensuring a flow of traffic with shuttle buses is one of them. Single track roads in Scotland are not designed to deal with the load of traffic that a 6 days event brings and its important to try and manage this as much as possible.

You are invited to put your views to us at Event Control tomorrow. Hopefully we can help reinforce the point made by other forum users that a one way traffic flow was essential. You may not have realised that there were 6 parking fields in use today - possibly more options than your Tesco car park.
If you don't like what we have done I suggest you take your custom elsewhere next time.

follyfoot, I was at the race all day and completely missed the travel fiasco. Can you tell us what was actually wrong, and how you would have done it better?

This is an outrageously irresponsible suggestion. There are very good reasons for the one-way system which Colin and his troops would explain to you. However, I doubt if you would appreciate their reasons if you think that people are capable of parking themselves, even in supermarket car parks with their marked bays and direction arrows. I have often sat stationary for lengthy periods in such car parks where drivers make asses of themselves.
Single track roads are an even greater challenge to many drivers.

Re: Scottish 6 Days - Day 5
I am stuck in the office at the moment so you'll have to excuse the rant. I took too many holidays at the start of the year enjoying orienteering in Portugal and N. Ireland so its of my own making. Having enjoyed days 1-3 I would have cut off my own arm or driven 4 hours each day from Aberdeen to have gone to days 4 and 5 but it can't be done.
The 6 days are a holiday event. For me this means a week off worrying about time and money - I dont have to be anywhere for a specific time (except 1 start every day) and I dont have to worry about spending money on enjoying myself because lets face it as a middle class sport none of us are exactly on the breadline. A perfect example of this was Day 2, having been at the assembly for 9 hours running and helping and seeing lots of cars leaving at the same time, I bought a donut, put my feet up and had a snooze. Because I can use the remaining 11 months of the year while I'm at work (as I am now) to moan about time and money.
As someone who had a background role on one of the days - I dont want to hear your moaning about the obvious logistics of moving 4000 people around an area which consists mainly of single track roads. I can only imagine how I'd feel if I'd spent the last 2 years setting things up.
My message: Get out there and enjoy the orienteering. Because you will be back at work next Monday.
thank you

I've not been paying attention - does you no longer get to drop your two worst days in the non-elite classes? My Dad had a shocker on the first day that is seriously holding him back!
Very jealous of everyone playing out near Oban! The maps look great and I hear the weather has been rather good.
