Emit at the JK

The relay area is quite unique. It's a massive munitions dump. And yeah, i think Caerwent is the name. When i was there i remember thinking, "this would be an awesome relay area"... it might not offer the traditional challenges we are used to, but it will be good.

Hopefully Allan's reply will clear all the matters up. Originally I was very anti, but after a few times using it was a convert, now prefering it to SI. I wonder if those moaning have ever planned using Emit. It is SO much easier putting out controls. Think of how many controls will be used at the JK. Make the planners life easy I say!!

Think of it this way - you're "d*bbing" the flat end between the lumpy bit at one end, and the two prongs on the side. It really isn't that difficult - even I can manage it. Don't try to lay the whole thing flat (unless you're doing the back up card).
I've only used it a few times - contactless at Mrs H's campsite sprint O, and normal stuff at PT et al, and it's ok, really it is.
I've found more problem with the fact that I don't have a clear palm with which to grab trees to get my fat carcass up steep slopes, over fallen trees and the like. And no-one's mentioned that you should keep it in the opposite hand to your compass as it may affect its direction.

Maybe...

Thanks Allan for clearing up my concerns anyway (though you've done yourself out of a sale!) - glad I asked the questions. As I've said before, I'm with Tatty in actually preferring it, despite owning a d1bb3r and not a brick.

Apologies Allan - I was merely going by the following
Meeting of EVENT OPERATIONS COMMITTEE held on Saturday 5 th February 2005 at the Lillieshall National Sports Centre
Management Committee is asked to NOTE:
05/04h The difficulties caused by the NEOA’s withdrawal from hosting JK 2007.
From which I inferred, perhaps not unreasonably, otherwise

Axel - we Midlanders are not old farts - we regularly use Emit at OD events and the first ever public hands free Emit event in this country was held at the WM JK event campsite in Lichfield.
Now Yorkshire people - they take stone tablets and chisels out on courses

Adventure Racer - I didn't mis-spell the word - haven't you noticed I've got a sticky E since I spilt some red wine on the key board (it's true

Love the reply. I can't understand what all the fuss is about as most juniors have used the EMIT system at either Peter Palmers Sandhurst 2004, British Schools Score Champs 2006, JHI's Bordon Heaths 2006 and last but not least the Compass Sport Final 2006 and their was no problems with the kids getting the hang of the system.
Yes, but some of them were amongst the loudest in expressing their dislike for it (until more recent experiences at CSC and Oxford etc).
Did you also notice most of the come my fellow old farts who can't seem to fathom out the most simple system come from the NW, NE and Midlands. Hey you lot get a life, and get yourself down to the Forest of Dean and try Oing with EMIT you might be quite surprised how easy it is!!!!
I got a life, which is why I emigrated north! Having tried (and now enjoyed) Emit, it is not as simple for a competitor to use as SI.

A couple of thoughts from an 'occasional' orienteer:
Mr timE - any chance your dvd of "How to use Emit" could be posted either here or on the JK website? That way a much wider audience will have exposure to it. Someone mentioned earlier that if you are open about the selection of Emit/SI then people are less likely to complain - if you offer them 'training' then they should be even more receptive to change. Also, if you can make it clear where to buy and which version it'll make it easier for people to make the decision (have you ever walked out of a shop because the sales assistants were ignoring you?)
With reference to smaller numbers of people using Emit regularly, at least some of the loudest shouters on this forum seem to concede that geography is actually a factor. However, the choice of Peter Palmer Relays, British Schools and JHI as examples of a wider exposure seem a little short sighted, as they cover a relatively small section of the orienteering population. If the dvd can be posted on the website (including the various 'tricks of the trade' of how to punch efficiently described throughout this thread) perhaps more of the so called 'moaners' will be converted. They (we?) are just concerned they may be at a disadvantage.
As for the comments about not going due to the punching choice...! I don't orienteer as often as I used to, but in the past the JK was right up there with the British as THE event to be at. Have things changed....? Do people only want urban races now....?
Anyway, to hopefully avoid being told to 'shut up' or being referred to as 'a moaning Northener' I will leave on a positive note by wishing you all a Happy and event-full New Year!

OK, I still haven't worked it out...
the duncan said (page 1 above) that:-
"(the Emit card) doesn't have a gay name like a 'd1bber' ".
For the benefit of gardeners everywhere, what's gay about dibbers?

Nothing wrong with gardening with dibbers. But has anybody ever successfully planted out their seedlings with an SI-card?
Anybody in OUOC caught using the term is ejected from the minibus and forced to walk home. Freedom of speech is a fine thing in moderation but there have to be exceptions...

Bricks are put onto the controls
