It seemed to be working pretty well when I started (about 11am). The strange thing was that there were only significant queues for courses 4 and 6 (maybe 10 people on each), yet it was courses 1, 2 and 3 that were said to be full on the web!
But I'd prefer a defined start time too - no great problem if you had to wait a few minutes today, but it would be much worse if the weather was bad. The block system also seemed to make life harder for the start marshals - it took a lot longer to mark off who was starting, because the list wasn't in start time order.

Ash Ranges Start Blocks
Roadrunner, It was not that courses were full at Ash, there were plenty of start times available, it was just that there were only a limited number of maps left as so many people entered late after the map printing was done. Courses 4 & 5 had the largest entry levels and that is why they had to queue where as courses 1 to 3 had less entries.
My own view is we will never curb the tendency to enter late, or EOD, so just charge them extra and use some of the money to print extra maps as they did run out on some courses and one school that turned up about 1220hrs with 14 kids could not get a run.

It seemed strange that not more maps were overprinted. It doesn't add that much extra to the amount when doing a print run. Especially when it was known mid week that courses were full .There were only 24 on M21 L, but no spare maps!! Seems a shame to have to turn away keen kids. What impression will they have got of our sport. Was there not the opportunity to copy up blank maps for them? Other weeks the planners draw up maps as and when they are needed, although that is sometimes due to the weather, not to running out of maps.
