Orienteering is / Orienteering means...
Moderators: [nope] cartel, team nopesport
can remember car stickers from yestayear
"Orienteers do it in the forest" (always liked that one)
"Give me a map and I'm magic"
"Want to try Orienteering? Get lost!"
"Orienteering, cunning running" (someone said that before)
there are more, but the little grey cells are a bit fuzzy this morning

Always wondered how many posts it would take before I prompted a typical Nopesport reaction...

As the whole aim of this thread is advertising orienteering at an Adventure Race, I think references to adventure racing are perfectly valid in this context.

We're putting together some new video footage to be shown on the big screen at the Rat Race and along with the footage of orienteers crashing through the terrain, round streets, etc etc we need some good lines to flash up along with it.

brooner wrote:Okay, here is the challenge you all have until the end of this week - (I want at least one from every registered user!), need lots of short phrases and words that could be used to describe orienteering and what it means to you, and how you would convey such a great sport to other people, things that convey how great it makes you feel and why people should give it a try. keep them as short and sharp as possible (definately less than 10 words). We'll have a vote amongst the cartel for the best/most original and i'll sort out some sort of prize(s) for the winner(s), and it won't even be a browned t-shirt (unless you want one).
Let the ideas flow.
Orienteering means...
Actually the original post of the thread doesn't mention adventure racing at all..... so I guess him / her above is talking...... guess what?

Orienteering is...
The point about "adventure racing" is to sum up what the sport is about in as few words as possible, so that someone who has never heard of orienteering would have an understanding of what it is about. You can describe football as "kicking a ball about" and you get the general idea without having to explain the offside rule.
Many folk don't think of orienteering as a running sport at all, but walking with a rucksack etc with a map and compass. "Adventure racing" at least conveys the idea of some athletic connection.
It may not do it for Gordon, but I think its legitimate in the context of the thread.

It is worth remembering Gordon that barely 10,000 people orienteer in Britain. We have no God given right to define the word "orienteering". Perhaps the 100,000 (say) who walk with a map and a compass have more right to the word than we do.
It is up to us to tell the rest of the world what it is we do.... this is orienteering. The content of the thread so far is finding a way to do that... effectively.
Now back to finding ..... orienteering is......

Oh sh*t. Now we don't have a name for our sport! Who started this?

All 10,000 of us know what our sport is about, but unfortunately 'orienteering' is not a registered trade mark, or copyrighted. We rely on being able to telll others what we mean by orienteering. Adventure racing isn't trademark registered either, so we are quite entitled to use it to describe what we do....
This thread has come up with many brilliant expressions and descriptions of what our sport is to us. Brooner, please put them all together in one long list to make available for folk who need to use them.
Publicity is one of the keys to our future existence. We need to reach as many people as possible, which is why the work with schools is so important. We have the opportunity to define the word 'orienteering' with this upcoming generation and show that it isn't walking with a rucksac, map and compass......
All club publicity officers should now use the resource created in this thread to blast the general 'active' population with information on what we do. Let's go and get those new 6000 members that we so desperately need........

A different race for everyone, because no-one tells you which way to go.
