I think you have to be careful here, I believe its against the rules to blatantly follow someone (hopefully someone can correct me if I'm wrong) and certainly against the spirit of the sport.

So I guess it depends on how you define 'using', and I agree its certainly possible to run with someone without cheating.

I'm not saying get the velcrow o-top out, wait at the first control and run 1 metre behind for the rest of the race. Merely that if someone catches you, you're going to increase your pace to match there's (if you can, which Jaime clearly could!) and at the same time try and out navigate, or not because you can't match it.

However if you're on the ragid edge, at a world championships and one of the big names catches you after making mistakes early on, what would you do? True it's not sporting, and it's not the way to win but in that situation you're not going to worry about that.

It's definitely against the rules in Britain.

7.2.4 Individual competitors shall not intentionally run with, or behind, other competitors in
order to profit from their skill.

IOF rules are less clear cut

| 26.2 Except in the case of an accident, seeking to obtain or obtaining assistance from
other runners or providing assistance to other competitors during a competition is
forbidden.

Blatant following is certainly against the spirit of orienteering. However there is a big difference between blatant following and being aware of other runners around you while using your own skill to navigate. And following is next to impossible to prove, regardless of the rules.

Fair enough if they are the rules, they are the rules. Bit odd that the IOF aren't quite as hardlined. But like everything, they have no way of controling what goes on in the forest. As said above, you can't prove it!

Girls just finished in 10th

Yeh well done the girls! I think there are a couple of 2nd teams in the mix ahead of them so that should make them 8th country.

Sadly the lads 1st team didn't fair as well losing a lot of time on the first leg. Our 2nd team did well though to finish 13th beating both swedish teams and most of the other 2nd teams.

The Russian who took the gold on the last leg (Gleb Tikhonov) looks a bit speedy. Destroyed everyone in the sprint as well. I imagine we'll be seeing more of him in the future.

That's a really promising result from the girls. Congratulations!

The Boy's first team were hit with a late decision to withdraw Jonny (suffering from an ankle injury incurred yesterday). This affected the team.
Nevertheless the 2nd team boys did an impressive job, given their age (Aiden) and limited international experience - well done.

Well done to all the athletes - JWOC is as tough as it comes, survive that and you can survive anything!

We have already heard a bit about him in this country but I don't think many people will remember. He won M12A at Croeso 2004. Three other members of the GBR JWOC team from this year took 2nd (Peter Bray), 4th (Jonny Crickmore) and 7th (Tom Fellbaum). No pressure on the top runners in M12A at Croeso 2012 then.

Helen and I first met him and his parents at the wonderful Moscow Ringworld 1994 10-Day Event.

In 2012 there are 13 Under 20's with faster than 8:30 for 3K. All but one of these
appear to be outdoors. One of them (8:26) was an Under 17.
