The Loofa,
By referring to the rankings as "fun", I mean that they are a source of mild amusement, not that other aspects of O are not fun. If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it.
They are amusing because of the huge variables involved - eg terrain, frequency of competition which they cannot account for. At the end of the day, it's just statistics. Rankings can be a distraction from the main event. It's helped me to forget about the result, rankings, who else is running, but instead to just concentrate on my race and the basics. My run is the only thing I can influence. Rankings are the post race entertainment.
Rankings are good to measure improvement. When I first started doing TD5 2 years ago I was getting 600 points to match the headless chicken impersonations. Then I managed the odd 800. Now I've had a couple over 1000. You don't get these long term trends from the results in the small classes.

AWK you're true right about planners' guesstimates. No self respecting racing challenge points hunter would ever bother to attend an event that I planned
I remember the British Champs at Achilty proudly declaring that they expected the elite to run at 6.5 mins/km. Not only was that way out of any reality then, but I suspect the World's best today would struggle to get close now. And the controller showed me the late Jimmy Doig's initial M21E course - now not even Kitch would have gone below 2 hours on that
