For thse that wish to run shorter that is always available (excepting the TD dropping to light greenorange etc). Firstly C3s have short courses, and even then there is no reason why you can't run colour coded, or down if you want less.
The Elite that want long courses don't get this option - if the guidelines are not met they are short changed.
The top of older age classes get the option (regularly used) to run up, but this means not having the same pressure on that competitor, and more importantly in devaluing the competition in the real age groups.

Interesting to look at the results from the CSC final yesterday which had a top Elite field on the Brown course.
Should BAOC ever put a Regional event on then the M21L course would need to be around 14.0 km. (Not that the elite would necessarily turn up for such an event).
But how would the older age groups react to an M60L course of 8.0 km and a W60L course of 5.5 km ?

As a W55 who will be W60 next year I would be pleased with 5.5km - I had 5.3km yesterday and did 51 mins with 2 poor controls where I probably lost a total of 5 mins - sloppy technique when brain death was setting in after trying to run so fast (OK I use the word 'fast' in a relative sense!).
However, I would much rather know in advance approx what length the course was going to be (as suggested by Roadrunner) so that, if necessary, I could choose a different class.

I totally agree with Eddie, course lengths are almost always released before an event. there is very rarely a new area, so it's not to difiicult to work out how long the course will take. if anyone feels that their course is too long, then can drop down. for everyone except M21L, if your course is too short you can run up. but when the M21L is too short (which looking at the times from all of this years races, 90% are) then there is no where for the M21Ls to go.
