I got it twice

i got it 6 times- once 4 me and once 4 each of the kids. Didn't think it was for under 18's -

I think you have misunderstood the process. This is only to decide who might be willing to take part.... not those that have been chosen to do the actual survey itself.

Re-reading the email, I think you're right - I misunderstood it the first time. In which case, it seems rather pointless having two stages: why not simply invite people to do the survey straight off?

I suspect it's to do with obtaining a representative sample. They may want to ensure there are enough people in certain age categories/locations etc to be able to look for regional/age/sex differences in opinions. Or it may be that certain groups are more likely to respond positively to a survey request (not having a dig at Andy BTW) and they would want to avoid the survey being overrepresentative of groups that like filling in forms.

Those who ARE prepared to be involved in the real survey... will have replied and provided a limited amount of detail on gender, age and personal involvement in the sport. MORI will then use that information to select a representative sample who will ALL reply, presumably. Therefore the final survey results will be properly and statistically representative of O. Well.... that's the theory!

Well quite. Which was why when I read the mail and saw "sport england" I just deleted it.

I am sure there are plenty of Welsh and Irish people who have received it as well as the Scots posting here.

If you fill in the details that ipsos-mori require for you to register you will see that they will be using these to filter potential participants to a representative set (age, gender, geography, participation frequency etc)

this is all good and proper from a statistical viewpoint.

Unless of course there is an underlying agenda that deliberately filters out key elements/voices in order to misrepresent and mislead. That never happens.

I'd suspect that they could claim that Sport England/Ipsos MORI are "providing a service" to them by carrying out the survey.

The Sport England website says that the survey was commissioned by Sport England, not by BOF (or any of the other national governing bodies involved). I'd therefore say that by giving them our contact information, BOF were providing a service to Sport England, not the other way round, and they are therefore in breach of their own clearly stated Privacy Policy.

I have no problem with taking part in legitimate surveys, and if BOF had sent me an EMail asking if I would consider registering with ipsos/Mori to do the survey, I would probably have willingly done so. This would have clearly complied with their privacy policy, as the only details given to a third party are those that each individual enters on to the survey form themselves. BOF wouldn't have needed to give any of our personal details to any third party. The fact that BOF have given my personal details to a third party without asking me first, in breach of their privacy policy, gives me no confidence in the 'quality' of any equivalent privacy policy held by the third party organisation, leaving me questioning whether I want to give said third party any more of my personal information than they've already got. In fact the way this has been done has almost certainly guaranteed that I won't take part in this survey.

It would appear that some people continue to misunderstand what is going on..... and some are determined to 'BOF bash' whenever they can.

I understand the process as...... SPORT England have decided they need to research the 'status' of sport in England. They have asked sports to take part and have gone to the NGB's to ask them if they were willing to be involved..... to find out what the state of their sport is. BOF have said they are prepared to do so.... on our behalf they are willing to do what is required to take part. SPORT England then say that they will need to contact as many members of the orienteering fraternity as possible and they would use email addresses to do this, and using MORI as the mechanism to collect the data. They give the undertaking that they will comply with all data protection legislation. BOF provide the database......

What you are now receiving is the first stage of the process.

BOF are doing things correctly in this case. Enough!

But the most disconcerting thing is the number of annoying phone calls from Ipsos Mori regarding answering a few questions. I am in favour of online surveys you can complete at your leisure, but not annoying, harassing phone calls.
Has anyone else had these since registering?

No phone calls but another request to register (I've already done this) this morning.

Yes i have had another two today - the wording is subtly different from the first two - i can't be bothered to fill them in.

Also recieved the additional email requests - deleted them.
I have also suddenly started getting phone calls from them but had not connected them to this until now! (having hung up as soon as she identified herself)
Begining to regret answering the first round of emails.
