Given that most of our newer maps have been on smaller areas only suitable for smaller events anyway, and that our C3s outside the Dales don't tend to be that much larger than C4s anyway.....

A lot of our sixty odd maps started life as a 'rough and adequate survey' for one of our regular evening events. Once the 'new area' has been tried, and parking and other restraints worked out, the area is then subject to a good resurvey. With OCAD it is so easy to continually update and improve the map stock.

If the area has potential for extension and use for a C3 then it will probably get a professional survey and a PG plot. Quite often we have to 'educate' the landowner/tenant in what orienteering is all about, and using a small scale evening event with eighty or so competitors is an ideal way to showcase the sport. From there they are more sympathetic to allowing four hundred+.

Thinking about it would be in cloud nine if there were eighty active orienteers in the whole region.

Seriously, though we tend to rely on Croeso, or other major events, to have new quality areas mapped that we can benefit from. (e.g. Clydach Terrace next year or Pwll Du 3 years ago) Or we use the profits from the occassional large event to get a new area mapped.

With so much good terrain, and at least some major population centres, that reality is disappointing. What are WOA doing about it?
