Yes the rules are what we have to follow, but it's fun exploring possibilities. Standardisation is also good but not always optimum.

I wasn't really being serious about the letters thing, it just struck me as interesting that something we gave up years ago could be used to solve some current problems with numbered control codes!

Oh no they aren't.

Many years ago, at a JK Relay I think, the planner put out AO and AQ back to front. The course was voided as a result.

I suggest binary codes - then you are only dealing with 2 shapes, and it's hard to confuse 0 and 1.

But which is msb / lsb?

Hah - I've thought of that issue. Simply mandate that all control codes should be even, and that there should be no leading zeros.

Good idea, but then to have 64 controls the longest control descriptions would have to have six digits, which then becomes seven digits because of the 'every control must be even rule'. Now my eyesight's pretty good but I wouldn't trust myself not to punch 1111100 when looking for 111100 or vice versa.

Cue National Events force people to map-read because that becomes easier than checking control descriptions?!

In order to ease the progression of juniors into the sport, the rules should be changed to mandate pictures of dinosaurs (or Mr Men, or Disney characters) instead of control codes.

Hmm, I once had an appeal from someone who punched at "giraffe" instead of 257 when the string course encroached on the area. Similarly, I once punched at A rather than 246 assuming it was a replacement (when colour coded and JK controls were kept separate).
I wasn't DQed - maybe the punches were the same...

Many years ago when Bournemouth OC was in existance i punched at a wrong control near the beginning of my course. Returned via the correct control near the end of the course to discover the two pin ouch marks were the same so I wasn't DSQ'd!!

Just be thankful we don't have these attached to our control stakes! Anyone wrinkly enough to remember using them for real?
