long race results for the British runners are up on the BOF website. There doesn't seem to be much life on the italian results service. See http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/a ... asp?news=O
The highlight would have been a 6th place for Heather - but she is currently dsq but team GB are protesting.

World Cup races, Italy - Relay
Mens 1st team 10th, 9th Nation as both SUI teams ahead.
Forest same as Long. Very heavy mist for first starters (altitude at 1500m odd). Bucket loads of rain and rather chilly.
Quite big difference between leg lengths due to gaffling, so times not necessarily indicative of progress in the race. I was a few seconds ahead of Speakey in the finish but he got to the download first! Changeover was before this. Several times in the race he and others appeared ahead only to pass them spike your controls and then see them ahead again.
I think all the boys were happy with their runs, JD. especially JD. He said he saw nobody out there. GG said he saw him and Tero Fohr but couldnt keep up.
Women 7th but 5th Nation I think.
Banquet tonight. Heathers last - so should be a good send off.....
Still raining....

According to the BOF news
Does anyone have any more details? Was there a punch recorded on her SIcard? Was it a full registration in the SI unit or an error showing that she had punched too quickly?
We now have news about Heather Monro's disqualification in long race - apparently she did punch at the spectator control and Sport-ident box registered it but the results computer didn't, so she was disqualified.

Although I was in Italy, I arrived after the Long Final and didn't find out the full details. It seems it was a case of hearing the beep but not recording the punch in the card.
However, the situation wasn't helped by the fact that the runners couldn't use their own (type 6) cards but had to use those provided by the organisers instead. These were old, so much so that one "broke" during a race meaning that the competitor had to punch her map for the last part of the course. At download, the card registered nothing at all and she had to be reinstated after box interrogation.

Not checking any of the rules or anything, but my guess would be that when it is the organiser's responsibility (eg. handing out nearly 'broken' SI card), then boxes can be checked. It's tough for Heather but if it was the spectator control, it's quite possible that there was quite a lot of noise and all and she may have heard somebody else's beep?

A competitor with a control punch missing or unidentifiable shall not be placed unless it can be established with certainty that the punch missing or unidentifiable is not the competitor's fault. In this exceptional circumstance, other evidence may be used to prove that the competitor visited the control, such as evidence from control officials or cameras or read-out from the control unit. (from IOF Competition Rule 20.7)
Andy - I hope you'll agree that the case of the "broken" SI card just about comes into the "exceptional" category!

It makes sense forcing competitors to use more modern equipment, like the v6 cards, but to force them to use the old-style ones? seems a bit counter-productive, although I guess it was so no competitor had any 'advantage', the small difference it makes... But surely with an event of that standard they could have obtained some v6 cards from somewhere?
