while we are on live results, mercs have done something for the harvester which allows you to see on monitors when your runner has punched pre warning on relays, and at several other points on the course. This would have been of great uyse yesterday when many people missed their runners in the messy change over (some decided postions). These could also be adapted surely for elites and be shown on big screens at events and possibly online.

I didn't see anything messy about the change over Rob, if people missed their runners it was because they weren't paying attention - there was plenty of time from when the runners came into sight until change over - and plenty of places in the pen to see them come round the corner - I thought it was a great venue seeing the runners flitting throught the trees and OD are to be congratulated - don't blame anyone else but the runners for being ill-prepared please!

This worked really well and was very popular with the runners at the event. I think Gavin's display format was excellent - from what I remember there were two screens, with 1 showing runners' progress to the radio control, the other progress to the finish (+ results). The results were displayed on standard laptops, which was ok for this small event with people huddling round the back of a car boot (only 50 or so people there) - if that could be projected up to some kind of larger screen it would work really well.

I agree it was a great changeover area. The only problem I had with it was it wasn't clear as an incoming runner where your next runner was going to be. You got to the bend and there were loads of people the other side of the tape so you start looking, only to find these are just spectators and the changeover is further, and I did look beforehand but of course there were no runners waiting when I went out!
Anyway back on topic. The concept of having a screen to show incoming runners from the radio control is virtually trivial. I say virtually because most of the software packages are completely bespoke and non-standard. I'm going to sound like a broken record but we need the data from the controls in a standard format (IOF) then any application can use it to do whatever (e.g. changeover screen, commentary, online, leader board, tv overlay etc).

I'm afraid I'm going to have to back Rob up on this one, there was such a crowd at the front it was difficult to see, it's ok if your big enough to barge your way through but one of our smaller runners knew her team mate was in but couldn't get through and lost quite a bit of time.

That is indeed a shame - and they don't come much smaller than me - but as you know I'm very good at barging - I suspect the fault may be more with the manners of those waiting than the set up in general - perhaps something that needs a little consideration in future?

I agree and I do see that for BOC they will have a seperate are for smaller runners, hopefully this will avoid the problem. Apart from that the relays were great, well apart from me running the wrong way to my last control and loosing a place to a team from my own club
...sorry guys.

While we are on about manners and consideration. Could we please have some consideration for people wanting to view the results. Why oh why oh why, do competitors look at their results and then stand right infront of the results boards, close up, chatting to their mates/colleagues about anything and everything taking no more notice of the results but stopping everybody else from seeing the times. This seems to be a speciality of the bearded brigade. Look at your results then b*gger off out of the road and let someone else have a look.

Thanks Simon I'd been there but there was nothing so I went away and returned, fortunately my correspondent had already left me a message, so I was just curious.
A really poor turn out compared to previous years, particularly at primary level. What are the SDO's doing I thought this would be a target event.
If you excluded the main stream kids there were very few schools represented

Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

First Trial went very well with Fatboys software.
This is the same as that was trialed at the world cup on the big screen.
It works with any results system that outputs IOF XML
