Re: Lakes 5 Days
Sometimes you know that you will not be able to publish results until late due to the location, potentially late finishers, lack of internet connection etc. There may be problems outside of your plans, but at least it manages expectations.
I do club results so knew there would be a good reason for the delay - I think it was just the deathly silence that caused some folk to get impatient. Personally I was quite pleased to have a delay before the awful truth was revealed

It's better now that one set of results has been published and it's obvious where the link will appear on the home page.

How expectations change. When I first won the british championships in the Lake District, I did not know until someone told me in a car park to collect the trophy from their car 2 months after the event. Printed results arrived some weeks later.

Tonight Winsplits seems to be a bit ahead of results page.

Re: Lakes 5 Days
Given that provisional results are posted on the boards and available on wifi at the event it would be good if these could be posted online soon after the event.
Is the policy to check and repair the results and only publish them when they are final?
I understand that the Scottish 6 day used to have this policy but have changed it for next year in favour of early publishing of provisional results.

Re: Lakes 5 Days
Does anyone else feel it is a poor show that no drinks or even water are offered to competitors after the run?
Given the high cost of the event in comparison to other European multi day events (e.g. tallinn o week(2 wre), Croatia open) a bottle of lucozade and a mars bar each day and the event would still be pricey, water is the least we could expect.

No, no , no! The effort in gerring rid of all the waste bottles is tremendous. It is very little effort on behalf of the competitor to bring some water. They will probably have extra liquid in their car anyway. Makes me wonder how many events, big or small, you have organised? I can tell everyone now that we wil NOT be providing water at the November Classic that I am organising this year.

Re: Lakes 5 Days
Tatty - but we used to do this for most events. This is I think one of those cases where we have evolved a process that suits orienteers but is a potential turnoff for newcomers to the sport who would have every right to anticipate water at the finish - it happens at every other endurance type race I can think of.
Also I can think of one or two races in the past year or so where there have been remote finishes in very hot weather and no water which I'd suggest poses a bit of a risk to competitors.

Orienteering - its no walk in the park

Re: Lakes 5 Days
It can be quite a task getting the water in also and it requires some manpower to supervise distribution as well. For these, and for Tatty's reasons too, we had a no drinks at the Finish policy at Croeso 2012 also. We did have the Finish in the arena each day though, so the issue of remote Finishes did not arise.
But we did solve the results posting issue at Croeso 2012 by taking the task away from the hard pressed results team and have one person whose responsibility was to find somewhere with internet access and post the results onto the website as their major priority. This was achieved by about 7 pm each day.

The above answers are another example of why European events have a friendlier and less officious air to them.
You are correct, if slightly over defensive, to point out I've not organised large events but I've been to many over the last 25 years. It always seems a nicer atmosphere when there is a bit of music playing and things are made as easy possible for competitors rather than the organisation team.

Re: Lakes 5 Days
Thanks to all involved in organising this week...the extra events providing some nice alternatives too with the MDOC score an interesting addition last night and nice to be so informal. Looking forward to weaving my way through lovely Ulverston tonight
I was wondering though about the photos though....there seems to be incredibly little on the ActivNorth website? Do we know if that's it? Compared with our usual wonderful standard and selection from competitors at big events (Wendy, Rob etc) I was surprised to see a professional site with so little!

Understand all the issues but in ianf's defence, you can't get much bigger than the Swiss O-week, and they provided bottles of water and a snack every day, with all races bar one some 800m above the town and valley floor. I was actually really glad of these in addition to the water I carried, even on the damper cooler days!

Re: Lakes 5 Days
Just back from Croatia 5 day and yes it is a much lower key affair in the arena, for example no commentary (but we only get them at JK etc), loud pop music playing all day in the arena, usual stalls. We normally had water at the start and on some days (long) on the area, only had a bottle of water handed out on the last day, not sure why as we did not have any on the other days.
But overridingly very friendly, good courses and areas, we can recommend Croatia, it reminded us of the atmosphere of the Czech 5 day.
1 thing caught us out though was on 2 days they had not arranged parking, on the sprint day you had to park in the town where you could (car parks) and walk and on another day park in the event centre town and walk to the arena. All worked fine.

With reference to photos, ActiveNorth is operating from a campsite where the Internet Bandwidth is very slow. I know he will have much more to upload when he gets within better bandwidth range. Also, the weather on the first day was not ideal for camera equipment as he fully established (now one camera down).... STOP PRESS, I believe more photos have been uploaded today.
