YBT Qualifiers

And with there being 3 major junior competitions in the autumn in British Schools Score, British Schools Champs and YBT, I argued that they should rotate around North (NWOA,NEOA,YHOA), Midlands (WMOA,EMOA,EAOA) & South (SWOA,SCOA,SEOA) year on year. That would mean that each area hosted a junior competition each year, but each region only one every three, to try and even out the long commutes.

That certainly works this year with

BSSC - WMOA, BSOC - NWOA and YBT - SWOA

Well when I was on Fixtures Committee I felt that the M6/M1/A1 etc box favoured the midlands clubs through shorter commuting distances to finals.

An often rolled out reaction, but what it also ensured was that most clubs had reasonable travel times each time, and as far as I can recall we never got a club refusing to travel or seriously underpowered. This way round, it's almost inevitable. Certainly, the Midlands clubs didn't win all the time by any means! We modelled it on the Swedes, who always host their Junior Tio-Milai in the same, central, part of Sweden, and get clubs travelling from big distances without compunction.

But, how do you persuade a junior to travel 5 hours, sleep on a floor overnight, run for 20 mins on a yellow course and then travel for another 5 hours?

Must be that juniors of yore and juniors in other sports were and are made of sterner stuff. For instance, most runners in junior cross-country and athletics will run for far less time (even measured in seconds in some cases). 20 minutes is quite long comparatively.

Have to say, we never used to have this problem.

WOA qualifier and Cwpan Y Ddraig at sunny Hafod today. I believe only the second time we have had a qualifier in Wales.

Won narrowly by POW from SBOC in 2nd with SWOC in 3rd and ERYRI 4th.

I understand that this year POW are intending to attend the final, which would be great to see - the first YBT final with Welsh representation.

Also PFO qualify, due to DEE 4th place in final last year. Well done.
