Considering that the website should be the prime form of communications to members, the press and the public it seems strange that no one on the board or paid employee seems to have ownership/responsibility of it. It's no wonder that poor communication is the most common complaint I hear about British Orienteering.

Interesting coincidence (but not suprising IMO): I made just this point barely a week ago in an exchange of emails with National Office on a completely different topic.

That's ok then.... as long as there are some new rules coming then you can ignore the existing ones....

Must use this approch in Urban O.... they might change the uncrossable boundary definition sometime in the future so it's ok to ignore the present rules.... BOF is starting to depress!!!!

I think BOF need to be far more vocal with matters like these. If they had (clearly?) stated that they would ignore these rules as new (better?) ones are coming, then fair enough. However leave it to the situation we are in now and we are (quite rightly) making slightly facetious comments.

As usual, Gross has distorted the truth to have a bit of fun at BOF expense. Nothing new there.

Rules are rules, and cannot be ignored, while they are current. When new rules come along, the equivalent old ones are superceded, with effect from the date the new ones apply. And yes, from that date you can ignore the old (superceded) rules!

What I've pointed out is that by the time we get to 2013, there will be some rule changes (for example, about eligibility at British Championships) that will have taken effect.

But note...
a) it's a "should" not a shall.
b) The exam season here at the Orienteering Centre of Excellence is late April, early May.
...so you don't have to follow the rule, which is lucky, because it's self-contradictory.

But it's not just the date, it is the whole format of the final.

Things such as a middle distance race on the Saturday - with seeded start list, a reverse order start on the second day on a proper long distance 70 minute course using a 15000 map, commentry, and so on. All the things that used to make it a real prestigious event.

Both the finals since those rules came into effect (January 2011) have borne no relationship whatsoever to the rules. Instead we have simply seen FCC courses tagged on to the event running concurrently to the UK cup final.

If the issue in question is how the current 2011 rules were used in 2011 and 2012, then I guess it's the point Graeme highlighted, about the rule saying "should normally" rather than "shall".

Well on a point of order Spookster you are in a privileged position to know what the rules for 2013 are - we are not. so you cannot berate people for not knowing what those rules say,

and secondly if the existing rules "should normally apply" it seems a bit of a co-incidence that abnormal conditions should prevail two years running

Given that we are now rapidly approaching the end of October, when will these new rules be available please?

Quite possibly just what I said - they established an official Orienteering Centre of Excellence here at the University of Edinburgh, where many of the top 18s and 20s come to study. And our exam season is late April, early May (though it was May/June when the FCC was established). So having the best interests of the students at heart, BOF didn't want to give them an invidious choice between JWOC selection and examination success.
