Levels redux

At district events my club, like I suspect most, has provided a pre-marked, bagged bang up to date map along with SI timing and rapid results service for the past deacde - something unheard of in the 90s.

Only District events?
My club, EckO, has been doing that at every local event for over 6 years, and RouteGadget too. In fact we have been using waterproof paper for a few years as well.

Last year the Edinburgh race was level B, this year level C. Difference between the two races - zilch; importance to the competitors - zilch.

...awareness of controller, planner, organiser or helpers as to what level it was - zilch.
If only we'd known, we would have made the courses a bit crappier and refused those world class athletes their entries. Or whatever we were meant to do.

Tend to agree with Graeme's sentiments here in the sense that the difference between B and C events can be marginal. Although in the case of Edinburgh I think this was very much a level B event masquerading as a level C event.

On a separate note:
It does seem a bit daft to have "traders invited" as a criterion for level B as this doesnt mean anything to the competitor unless they actually turn up (and the whole point of the levels is to let the competitor know what to expect isnt it?)

Didn't wanrt to brag but my club has also put on over 20 CAT D events on brand new over printed maps - but we don't use SI for such events.

When conceived district events tended to use older maps with master maps and fairly antiquated timing and results.

That's true - but the other key difference in the past was that at Regional events competition was in age classes (though I don't think there was any problem in people running up, or down provided they declared themselves non-competitive) and you could earn the badge standards and ranking points, whereas at District events you could enter any course competitively, and earn colour-coded standards.
