The gratuitous insult against all EBOR areas is a bit over the top..... Pickering/Newtondale, Cawthorne, Skipwith, Barnscliffe, Wykeham, Penny Howe.... are all good areas and certainly a good test for those who wish to progress to World Champs in tough areas like those earlier this year.

I didn't say they weren't Steve - I've thoroughly enjoyed all of those, and wil continue to do so. But the North York Moors won't and don't attract people in the same way that, say, the Lakes, Scotland, sand-dunes etc will. Just because an area is a good test of one's orienteering, doesn't necessarily make it attractive (and it's not what I find attractive that mattered in this case!)

Of course, if the limit of your ambitions is to decide which is the best way to circumnavigate a block of flats, you might find them a bit technically and physically demanding

I totally agree, but then I don't think that's the limit of most FCC finalists' ambitions, nor the reason that they didn't turn up.

The FCC is irrelevant and always will be while it is not in the selection criteria for JWOC.

Well, it thrived for several years before it was used for JWOC selection, mainly because it was thoroughly relevant, having arisen directly from feedback from a series of summer junior tours. It all depends how you run it and sell it.

Is their a document somewhere that translates 229's selection criteria into Harry's selection formula and explains what points get awarded for which races and other attributes so we can understand better?

On the subject of retention in this age group - it was due to be discussed at the June development committee meeting but there wasn't time. Not sure if it's coming up in the next meeting but sounds like a good idea.

I believe some of the club nights are, or are aimed to be, located on or near university campuses and if designed and marketed correctly could be an answer to the problem of universities which don't have enough people interested in orienteering to form a uni orienteering club. Not the whole answer to the problem but something.

If you are a student studying in England, or plan to be a student, it's worth thinking about this project as there is money available from the SportEngland grant to pay for coaching, and this money is likely to be more than you would get working in a bar or in Tescos (and more fun too). Obviously you have to get the UKCC level 1 qualification first which isn't free, but many clubs will pay for this, possibly via a development fund grant.

I think 229 has the 2011 criteria. The 2012 document with the "percentage behind" criteria for squad selection has been circulated to the athletes to explain why they are in which squad, but I don't think it's gone up on the website yet. No doubt it will appear in due course.

Really sorry you feel that way, particularly given so many who contribute to this forum have put a lot of time and effort into development/coaching, whilst loads of others are parents etc (I accept that there are not many of this age group here, but I was assured this was more to do with using different channels nowadays rather than anything about this forum per se). Please explain, as it's not clear to me (old fogey that I am) as to what those on this forum have done to alienate.

I remember the one-to-one coaching chat with awk on the ferry home (yes it was that long ago) it lasted forever because we both like to talk, and it was my favourite subject (myself)

The coaching and even the whinging is appreciated! It shows everyone has some passion for the sport whether it is competing or getting the tiny organisational details right. Somebody has to care about those things!

Obviously not. If i'm not mistaken my comment had nothing at all to do with that initiative but this forum and you have taken it entirely out of context. It is like saying to the numerous people before me who have said that BO have done nothing to encourage the younger age group. "What you mean the people who are setting up clubnights and increasing participation in the younger age group. You mean the people who are encouraging University clubs to attract new members".

It is perhaps an empty point that I make as we are long past the point of no return in terms of this being a lively place for discussion for all ages. The junior and banter forums died long before facebook and other social media started.

But you still don't explain how this forum has alienated. For instance, given that nobody other than juniors could contribute to the junior forum, I don't see how anybody here could have killed it off other than the juniors themselves, so need it explaining in very simple words!

Rockaldo what I would like from you is the context. It seems to me as you made an assertion without providing the context or evidence to support your assertion. People will be genuinely interested to learn what led you that conclusion as to be honest us old foggy's don't have a clue what the problem is.

Please give us some examples because we are really interested in hearing what you have to say.
