Re: Southern Night Championships
I am now quite keen to go to the Southern Nights
Is there anybody who would be willing to give me a lift to/from either a nearby station (Gillingham or Tisbury?) or somewhere in the South-East (I'm in Guildford but can get places by train)? I would be very grateful and happy to pay petrol money.

I managed to miss this last February - will there be one next February?
Can't make it to Southern Night Champs - although I'm in the SE the British Night Championships are much closer so I'll hopefully be going there.

The high parts of lasts night's Deeside night league were in quite a few inches of beautiful powdery snow - a straight carry on from last winter. What an utter joy

Re: Southern Night Championships
Thread re-hijack: corporate apologies, but in its bountiful wisdom, the Army cotinued to select the Southern Nights weekend for its own 2-day night & day championships ... and moved them up to Harrogate. I was severely tempted to stay down south (and if I had known in advance that the Army race would be less than 5km on a 1:5,000 MAP, would probably have decided differnetly). If there's much more snow oop north, have you printed any spare maps?

Which is one of the reasons why the entry this year is so disappointingly low.

However, yes, there are plenty of spare maps (we are using up the surplus for a club/schools event on Sunday morning) except we are running a bit short of Short Brown course maps, partly due to some tactical course switching by competitors after we'd printed the maps but before the (extended) entry closed.
When I planned my first night event, I was told that a planner should consider the event a success if the number of entrants was greater than the number of controls being used. We have at least now got past that particular hurdle.

I wasn't there last night (injured
) but thanks to anyone involved and please keep putting them on - night O (and that other ever popular variant, long O) are my favourite events! (anyone for a long night O?)

...and I couldn't get to Harrogate from Morpeth because of the snow. Was really looking forward to it as well.
On the subject of night running, has anyone tried the new "Core" battery from Petzl? It replaces the AAA batteries in your Tikka or Zipka but what is really smart is the fact you can program the battery for anticipated use. For example if you wanted to use it on a night event you could tell it to operate at 100% brightness for the time you are out. Obviously 100% brightness will not last all night, so if it was an event that did last dusk to dawn you could program it to give max output e.g. 60%. It's a £30 investment, but replaces 900 AAA batteries. My worry is that because these torches are small you will lose the torch and the unit well before that time is up (anyone find my Zipka from the OMM 3 or 4 years ago?).

That new battery looks interesting - better than having to replace AAAs regularly.
