I think it is important to be able to explicitly display in both age or course, this makes the status of either mode equal. By asking the competitor to filter age by eyeball from a whole course list, this lowers the status of the age based competition.
An earlier suggestion on this thread was to list by course but also provide category positions. This is the method adopted by our regional XC league. So for example the full results from last Saturday's race contain
- Code: Select all
92 ANDY WASDELL (MILTON K) 34:16 M 44
93 SAM LOWE (BRACKNELL) 34:21 M 45
94 JUDE CRAFT (HEADINGTON) 34:23 F35 1
95 MICK BRADLEY (WATFORD) 34:28 M50 7
96 CHRIS MAHON (MILTON K) 34:29 M40 26
97 JOHN TAYLOR (CHILTERN H.) 34:31 M 46
98 ROY TREADWELL (OXFORD) 34:32 M60 1
where the last column gives the category position. (Owing to motorway accidents, several women missed the start of the women's race and ran in the men's race instead: hence the presence of an F35 in this extract.) Leaving aside the dreadful all-caps style, what do you [edit: anyone, not just SeanC] think of this way of presenting the results?
(Bonus question: how many regular orienteers can you spot in the full set of results?)

Not sure if your question is directed at me or the other reader, but personally I don't have a strong opinion as I'm not particularly motivated by age based competitions. But the significant minority who seem to be are still needed to keep these events economic, so if you filled in the questionaire/petition at the scottish 6 day, what do you think?

I've seen results columns like that from O events - not rocket science to do it, particularly now with easy (to some!!) programming. just needs a bit of thought, a little time on the results programme and slightly more space on your screen.
