It's going back a bit, but what about Age Hadler's monumental route choice in the 72 World Championships, taking a massive route round amongst the sandstone (?) pillars that even the planner hadn't seen (so I believe)?

I could never work out that leg looking at it in the living room when I got a copy 15 odd years after the event. A realy clasic leg. Whish I had the map here to look at again now.
