I was overtaken by both the winning women - Sarah leaving the Barbican and Helen on Farringdon Street. Although they were going at a decent pace, neither seemed to be running flat-out, so it's impressive that they took 10 minutes out of the rest of the field.

What an excellent course the 2M was. (There were a couple of places where temporary barriers confounded my route choice, but I'll forgive that.) I hadn't done my homework so I found the first few controls a bit tricky, but as I went along I could feel myself "getting into" the map and my speed improved - until the Barbican threw a spanner in the works...

(By the way, according to RG, the north and south routes to the control at Blackfriars were exactly the same distance. Does anyone know the RG pixel-to-km conversion rate for this race?)

AH - I think it's the other way round - 1000 pixels = 1270m, or 790 pixels per km

Indeed they should. Can anyone tell me how to do this neatly in OE2003? I couldn't see a way of tagging n/cs so that they appear in the list but without positions.

WRT the M21s on shorter courses I am planning on addressing one aspect of that in the future by offering M/W Novice courses of (say)3-4km. We want to use the the event in part as a vehicle for getting new people to try the sport - so we have to offer what they need in the way of courses.

there is an n/c field in the entries->entries list, but I think it shows them at the bottom of the main list along with the mispunches (I might be wrong, it's aages since I used OE)

I think the best route from 136 to 110 is to follow the route shown by Angry Haggis as far as the top of the ramp, but then go east long the main road (London Wall) for 80m then north-east near 113 and south-east into 110.

Why? It's not a championship. By all means keep the prizes (and Nopesport league points) for those running the "correct" course, but n/c status should only be for those e.g. who have too much course knowledge.

Planner’s Comments for the City Race are now posted at http://www.cityrace.org. I have tried to cover the issues of runners going out of bounds plus late alterations to controls etc. in those so won't repeat here.

Especially for Mrs H we are trying to sort out dates for next year’s race at the moment. Our challenge is that the orienteering calendar is already getting full at our preferred time (Lincoln City Race, Edinburgh PWT, Warwick City Race...) combined with the fact that London is popular for so many other events, (e.g. The Tour of Britain last weekend finishing with a stage race through the City). Still, we should have everything sorted by December.

The Globe Mrs H? Well, with a bit of luck you’ll get to run past there next year. Personally I went to Proms in the Park – but that was stretching it a bit after getting up at 5am to put out controls. And of course we had arranged the Thames Festival especially for you all – complete with riverside fireworks.

We will certainly have another extension to the map next year; hopefully south of the Thames. And we have a further extension in a different direction planned for 2011. Plus, of course, something special for 2012. (How’s that for forward planning?)

Well, it’s all over for another year and I have finally stopped dreaming about route choice options through the City. Unfortunately, in my enthusiasm I volunteered to be Race Director for next year, so there is no escape...

11 September The Bronte Double; 2 short urban races in villages associated with the Bronte's in deepest Pennine Yorkshire. Both new areas.

12 September Otley Town Race. A new map being drawn by awk himself.
