That's how WRE points work, you need to have n currently ranked (at or above some level perhaps?) runners for the race to count for WRE points.

For what it's worth i think the exlcusion of night events was the most marginal call made (unlike say, excluding score events or relays) and not too many people would be that fussed if it were changed.

As for lobbying: the standard route for comment is email to feedback@britishorienteering.org.uk The RWG has been officially thanked for their contribution and relieved of duty, but there are Board members who are nopesport contributors and presumably some more hoping to be elected in a couple of months...

Say at a colour coded, Black, Brown, Blue, Green are 100%, light green get ranking less 10% .....

But the point is that at many events these courses should be called light green, long light green, very long light green etc.. you can't exclude or downgrade someone's results on light green on TD grounds if their course is the same TD as others at the same event.

I like what i find ~ well done BOF and the working party.

There may be teething problems regarding data, they can be corrected and will, if not, get flush out of the picture as more recent results get added.

There will be some who question if the rules for calculating points are fair ~ you will never please the more vocal orienteers all of the time ! At the end of the day however it's a way of benchmarking ~ I can never be a way of identifying the best orienteer in the UK. Now there's a new thread ~ how do we evaluate the "best" orienteer ?

I find the displays easy to read and filters easy to apply.

A small regret is that the option to filter by region was not included at the outset. I realise it was necessary to limit the complexity of the function in order to get something up and running this January. I hope though a regional ( i.e Association) filter will be introduced in due course.

I think I could represent a body of club orienteers who, JK apart, rarely travel outside of our region. We are probably unlikely to amass sufficient points to challenge the top 10%.

But we do participate regularly in the Sunday fixture programme and do therefore get to know our colleagues in other clubs in the region. To us therefore our orienteering community is the Region. We would be much more interested to follow where we stand in the regional rankings than where we sit in the national tables.

Juniors are currently excluded from the rankings but many are now running TD5 and want to be included especially as this is the age where they start consistently beating their parents!

I know 1 junior who is working on a junior ranking scheme.

Are there others and would they be interested in seeing one?

I was re-reading the write up on the Major Topics page to acertain the qualification rules as I was noticing some orienteers who I know have attended ranking events are not appearing in the lists.

I guess the following means you have to be a national BOF member to be ranked

All competitors who are members of British Orienteering and aged 18 and above will be eligible to score

Shame as all clubs have a lot of members who don't travel out of region ~ They therefore only join as Local BOF members. Ranking surely should be as inclusive as possible.

Is there a reason '?

If people want to score on it then join the national federation - I feel thats fair.
re how to work out who is best - there are any number of ways to do this, depending on personal preference, strength, weaknesses etc. My personal opinion is the winners of big races are the best orienteers - ie those who won when titles were on the line and the best runners (buy and large) were there. JK, BOC, SHI etc are the races that carry weight for me. I respect people who win the big races - they have produced the goods on the day rather than run loads of lowly "badge" events and had some good performances here and there. I feel the ranking list, if it wants to be a ranking of the best orienteers in each age class, should have a weighting towards major events.

I think (but may be wrong) that both National and Local BOF members are included in the rankings. Non-BOF members aren't included, because you need a BOF number to act as a key in the database (and also, yes, to increase the "benefits" of joining BOF).

No, I'm sure that's not right Scott. You have to be a National BOF member to be included in the rankings.

If you look in any results on the BOF site, local BOF members are listed without a ranking score and the explanation of "local member only" or similar.

That's certainly how it used to work.

Yes, it seems that you're right - my mistake. Although the new version of Appendix K does say "All competitors [who are members of British Orienteering] in classes M/W18
or older at Ranking events shall score Ranking points", which to me suggests that Local BOF members should be included.

I had just switched on PC to check on the web site membership pages to see if mention of the ranking scheme featured as one of the benefits of BOF membership. Yes ~ the black bits do make it quite clear ~ National Membership only. It's a shame the major Topic notes were worded in a vague way as this prompted the question.

Don't think it's a great issue ~ just a shame we needed to make the ruling over something that could encourage club members to seek to improve.

But if we are to have two levels of membership we do need to have some additional benefits to justify the extra £13. For those orienteers who prefer to orienteer nearer home that effectively rules out most of the National Membership benefits.

It really becomes a question of whether or not members want to receive 4 editions of Focus and other assorted flyers and promotional literature through the post or they are content to rely on the BOF web site for that information.

To me it seems a shame to exclude local members - I would tend to agree with Clive's earlier statement that the rankings should be as inclusive as possible. I can understand the need to have some extra bells and whistles to persuade people that National membership is value-for-money, but nice though the rankings are I can't see them being too much of a factor in someone's decision to fork out the extra £13.
