I got some form trespass the other day - they are disposable, but they do rechargable one which you heat in a saucepan (making sure it doesn't boil dry)

As one who sweats profusely even at low temperatures, I find wrapping up warm with hat and gloves very uncomfortable. When I was hooked on x-c ski this was a major problem, and getting the right combination of clothing was quite difficult
I do spend a lot more time getting warmed-up before I start out, this really helps with the breathing (I do not have a medical condition) which can be tight if I start out cold; I carry a spare shirt, gloves and hat, in a bum bag, using the former about half way round and donning the latter if needs be. The biggest problem is wind chill, and when it is windy/route is wind prone I do also carry a breathable wind protection layer, but after half an hour this is soaked through too.

For the thighs... Nike, Craft, Sportful etc etc do running / skiing tights with wind protection built in.

The ones I use are just called Hot Pad handwarmers. You can get them from outdoor equipment shops (I've just googled them and some of the big mail order chains stock them.) They come sealed in polythene, you just rip the bag and take out the handwarmer which look like a tea bag. The more you squeeze it, the hotter it gets. Lasts several hours and continues to work even when wet - but not for as long. For an orienteering event, I'd usually just use one and swap between gloves as required. Don't need any preparation, and seem to last for ever until the bag is opened. Always have a pair in my O kit bag. They are more comfortable than the re-usable type - less bulky and more flexible, so you can still hold a base plate compass easily with a hot pad in your glove. I've used them for years, but no, I don't have shares in the company!
Neoprene just makes my hands and feet very, very cold.
