Re: Olympics!
I thought the badminton was pretty stressful - and that was only a first round match. didn't you think the commentator on the show jumping was funny - he was trying to see if he could hex them by saying how reliable everyone was - just before they knocked a fence down:P

Yes, the badminton was EXCELLENT at lunchtime today. The highlights didn't do justice to it. I couldn't believe how low down it was in the programme. An unbelievable win and 3 out of 4 of them contested the last Gold medal match.

fantastic effort from the 5th starter. With such an early start under consistent conditions getting the gold would have been an incredible feat. Silver is really good and shows how strong the individuals and team are.

no longer impressed - she's teeny tiny and must weigh about 2 ounces,
equivalent to carrying an extra energy bar !

I was a bit disappointed to find out about the 'footstep fireworks' because while I was watching it I couldn't help but say to myself 'holy crap, that's the most amazing display I've ever seen'
some of the human co-ordination stuff in the show (ceremony?) was outstanding though.... marred only by a single guy standing up at the wrong time (on the typewriter bit)

Re: Olympics!
Am I being silly here? Is this Emma Pooley the same one who was in CUOC who's calves I admired on a training camp back in the winter of 2003 (I think that was the year?!) She looks awfully familiar! If so that is even more cool!
Will? We've got proper fire now!

Re: Olympics!
Almost certainly - she was certainly at Cambridge Uni at that time, and was a better runner than cyclist as recently as early 2005 when I raced with her (she was first lady in Tough Guy). Hadn't realised she actually orienteered, but the name's unusual enough that it can't possibly have been anybody else.
Profile from back then at http://www.sleepmonsters.co.uk/profiles ... er_id=1061
So that's an olympic silver medal for an orienteer - congrats Emma!

Re: Olympics!
This sounds bad but I knew her only as Mark Bown's girlfriend Emma.
And as an up & coming triathlete / duathlete but I heard last year that she had switched to cycling and was doing really well as one of the Cooke GB dream team.
Like Kirsty Balfour, who will be breastroking to a possible medal on Friday, she's definitely been to a few o events in her time.

Re: Olympics!
Re Emma Pooley . . . so what do you think she might try next then? Rowing, a la Rebecca Romero in reverse ?!

Re: Olympics!
what has happened to Kirsty Balfour?
where did she go ?
given that she was a medal hope in today's 200m breaststroke I was expecting at least to hear where she was in the final - but she wasn't there and I haven't heard a squeak all week either in round 1 on Wednesday or semis yesterday.
again as a medal hope I'd have expected to hear where it went wrong ....?
