It was agreed, after lengthy discussion, to simplify the Rule on embargoed areas. All British Championship events (i.e. BOC, BRC, BNC, B Middle, B Sprint) and the JK should not be used for 24 months before the event, and the area would be embargoed for that period.

Ooh, is that being applied retrospectively?

And which bits of Culbin does the BOC embargo cover: the whole of the forest, or just the Culbin East bit that isn't mapped yet?

I ran in the MOR event on Culbin West (which is actually Culbin Middle, but let's not go there...) last november. Culbin West is currently embargoed for the Scottish Six Days, but I assume it will be open after August - can anyone confirm this? (Otherwise you would have to assume that everyone who runs SSD is dq'd for BOC )

Would be nice if someone could draw a line on a map and say "don't go east of this forest road" or whatever, rather than ruling out huge tracts of forest that won't be used for the competition.

What is the definition of "used" ?
Is it "navigated with an orienteering map" or "passed through part of the competition area in any manner".
e.g. If someone stayed in a B&B in Scarborough for 1 night 18 months ago should they have been non-comp in the British sprint ? How do you embargo a whole town ?

Firstly Sprints Are Excepted, as long as you dont test route choices, then you are fine

But im pretty sure you can only pass through on public roads in a car on classic/middle areas, i seem to remember us discussing this about leith hill a while back. So Eddie, if you have you probably shouldnt have, but for safety dont run again

I know i was embargoed for the burbage national as i did geography cw on the area just under a year before, and that was all on public footpaths

SLOW's website has the following to say about this (in relation to the Surrey Hill Race, which took place on Monday):

However, the JK officials have confirmed that this embargo does not extend to the Surrey Hills Race – we are told that the official view is that competing in an organised race that follows a set route along paths, such as the Surrey Hills Race, is OK. But don’t go straying off course looking for possible JK control features!

Interestingly enough, that race doesn't actually follow a set route - you have to navigate - but it is all along paths.

I am sure Gross was merely being mischievous as always. Frankly if anyone wants to disqualify me they are being beauracratic and ridiculous - advantage nil - I saw absolutely nothing I haven't seen before.
Then of course someone will have to go through the results and work out who else is also an orienteer.

Not sure where this comes from - the Rules committee extract appears to make it clear the same rule applies to the British Sprint Championships as to BOC, JK etc

If the B&B was in the sprint area then yes.

That's consistent with the IOF approach for the World Championships - eg specified areas in the centres of Olomouc and Prostejov are currently out of bounds for any access - including public roads - for WOC2008. And not only to athletes, but also to team leaders / coachs, doctors, and "others with strong links to elite squads"

One of the Danes who lived in Aarhus was severely restricted as to where she could go before last years World Champs- Well I think I recall the commentator saying something to the effect or even that she could not take part in the sprint because she lived in Aarhus.

Weren't there a number of Elite orienteers banned from the JK a few years ago for running over Finsthwaite Heights or somewhere similar?

It was a 'he' & it wasn't sprint & it was because he'd made previous map of area.

WOC 2001 and first sprint was a bit contentious as a few of the Finnish team were based in Tampere and regularly skied on sprint area during winter training

There is scope for common sense to be applied. A single visit to Scarborough or Warwick University would not breach the embargo so long as no atempt was actively made to gain an advantage. Someone currently studying at Warwick (or recently graduated) will almost certainly have a significant advantage and it would be difficult to argue that they could run competitively.

1983 !! Some of us relative newcomers have never run the same place twice (Delamere excepted). To me everything is new/vague.
