Far too elaborate, Freefall.
Being old, but slightly shortsighted, I can also read a map perfectly without a lens. I therefore have rimless glasses held by a nylon cord with the bottom quater cut away to my specification. The upper lens is for distance.
Because the lenses are cut away misting problems are reduced, and obviously there's no misting when you read the map!
You need surprisingly little lensless area to look under to read a map. Keep enough lens section to be able to run down hill efficiently.
Mark a line on the lenses with a permanent marker where you want them cut and take them to your optican. I had mine done for £11. It transformed my orienteering.
I used to keep quiet about this solution so I would have an advantage over my shortsighted rivals, but I hate to see you suffer!
You've now, at last, got an advantage over normal-sighted older people who can't read a map without a lens; in my opinion, this is the best way of exploiting it.
O glasses

Thanks for the tip - it had occured to me to cut away the bottom of the lens. I might just see how much of the top I need then mark the line. The weight saving will of course be considerable and I will gain extra seconds.
The only situation this might not work is night orienteering where you look through the top of your glasses! I had an upside down bifocal put in the R lens but it s a bit tricky to use.
