Couple of other bits of trivia (bit sad I know
):
It was the lowest ever winning score since the current scoring system was adopted in 1991 (3rd year of competition)
It was the best performance by the South East since their second place in the first competition in 1989.
Even though they have only won once, Scotland have most top three placings (13 out of the 17 years) in front of YHOA (12) and NW (10). They have also never finished out of the top 6, not matched by any other team.

As the Individual day organiser for SOC I must stress the HUGE amount of work done by Allan Farrington. Okay there were a few blips, but without BAOC ( a club with virtually NO juniors) there wouldn't have even been a JIRC this year!! Waiting a few hours for the results to go on-line is something you can surely cope with? If you had been around on Saturday morning and had, within 30 minutes, 3 phone calls to say 2 squads were stuck miles away without any transport would you have coped? Allan arranged for SOA to be collected from Southampton, assured both EMOA and NIOA that they would be able to start whatever time they arrived. He also re-arranged the evening meal to cater for this, at a financial cost to the event, AND contiuned to control and act as liason with the Sports club whose facilities we were using. If any thing it is PRAISE that should be gooing on this message board not a complaint about waiting a few hours. After all the results were all there on the day!!

Hear Hear. Thanks Allan - great effort. And a big thank you to Chris Poole for driving all the way to Southampton airport to pick up half of Scotjos at short notice. Also thank you to those who kindly and very willingly gave up car space at different times over the weekend.

On behalf of the SWJS, i would like to thank Allan, BAOC and SOC for hosting a really good JIRC's. THe areas were really good to orienteer on and everyone had a great time. The food on Saturday evening was top quality and its a shame the army can't cook at the JIRC's every year!!
Barriers are there to be overcome and for us to rise above them.

I'll back you up there Em in saying a huge thankyou on behalf of the SWJS for putting on a great event. It was nice to have beds (for some of us at least) and I really enjoyed the areas, especially the relay day which was a much more pleasant run thanks to the cooler weather. Though I'm not quite so sure about the food...I didn't think it was great and on behalf of my vegetarian friends they were not catered for at all, but at least there was plenty of it.

Not quite true Helen, there were 18 vegetarian meals provide, including the packed lunches, I know because we had to sift through all 270 on the Sunday to find the 18. I think the problem was more that the vegetarian options were not properly identified, the response I got from the cooks was well they only have to ask and we will tell them, that's contract catering for you. It was interesting to note that apparently all the food they now provide is automatically nut free. What they could not do was Gluton free and I had informed that person beforehand and I also had problems with the no-dairy option.
I tried the macaroni cheese myself on saturday night, but could not recommend it, so had the sweet & sour instead.

Like to say thanks to whoever it was that kindly saved me some food, being back late from the hospital saturday evening. Macaroni was pretty good I thought!

I was told the army food was good, one of the best curries I 've had. Accomodation was also great as the boys from the squad were all together. Good for squad bonding. The courses were good only problem was the line on the map between 8 & 9 which went through 3 & 7 (or something like that). On initial inspection it looked like a butterfly loop. I presume this was only on the older courses. By all accounts it was a great weekend. I think the JIRCS and PP's are real selling points of our sport for juniors. The first is not open to everyone but the PP's are open to any club juniors over 12 (admittedly who can get up a team). The YBT final is also great for the juniors but of course you need to qualify. The kids love events where they can socialise as well as compete. Also for some reason they are so much better when parents aren't there.....I wonder why

Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

Hmm, well all I know was that my friend asked and was told that the only option was vegetables, and she didn't get veggie lunches. Maybe that was a lack of communication then. As for the nut free, can't complain at that because as a sufferer myself I was very greatful to be told that I could have anything on the menu.

Unfortunately it seems that some squads didn't order the correct number of vegetarian meals but still expected to get them!! At the end we were 6 lunches short on Saturday despite preparing the number of lunches ordered. This means that some of you took extra. It meant that the NIOA squad, who had been on the go for 11 hours before they arrived went short. Not too clever the rest of you! You know who you are I hope. Not really on when you are asked to order your requirements and these are what are prepared.Hopefully next year more consideration for others will be shown in this area.

Can't blame the athletes for that:) It's down to the team leaders to sort the admin out...... Successful orienteering team coaching isn't down only to preparing athletes for the forest it's getting the rest of the 23 hours in the day properly arranged

Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)
