There I would agree with him, at least to the extent of using names not acronyms. It was something I've argued about long and hard especially in relation to publications like Route Choice 5, Compass Sport and Focus. Suse got quite used to my proofreading RC5 and insisting on replacing acronyms and abbreviations with names, unless the shortened version made sense (e.g. Aire). I hate seeing "NOC wins this" or "WCH wins that" - totally meaningless!!! I would also try and make sure something geographical was in there, e.g. "Essex Stragglers".
Never did get something added to Octavian Droobers or Harlequins though. But then all sports have clubs with names of indeterminate origins, and people (including journalists) usually don't have a problem with that.
