Steve Hale makes a good point about the naming of clubs in the uk

There I would agree with him, at least to the extent of using names not acronyms. It was something I've argued about long and hard especially in relation to publications like Route Choice 5, Compass Sport and Focus. Suse got quite used to my proofreading RC5 and insisting on replacing acronyms and abbreviations with names, unless the shortened version made sense (e.g. Aire). I hate seeing "NOC wins this" or "WCH wins that" - totally meaningless!!! I would also try and make sure something geographical was in there, e.g. "Essex Stragglers".

Never did get something added to Octavian Droobers or Harlequins though. But then all sports have clubs with names of indeterminate origins, and people (including journalists) usually don't have a problem with that.

HAVOC is actually Havering OC. Its an area in Essex.
By the way the November Classic is in its 38th year! We have a group of over 100 Swedes who are on their 38th European Autumn tour coming, visiting GBR for the first time.

Whilst we are proud of our club name "Octavian Droobers", we are careful to add the "Warwickshire and Coventry Orienteering Club" to all publications.

If we are submitting articles to the media we just use the geographical name.

This satisfies all the agendas - I think.

Going back to the original topic, i always prefer it when events have a name, and even more so when they have a set date e.g. using mharky's of the November Classic, always the first weekend of November (just for you lard ), Caddihoe Chase alwyas the 3rd weekend in September, Dorset Delight always first weekend in September.

This makes it so much easier when planning what you're going to as you know when particualr events are even before they've been registered with BOF.

I always feel the same about running races as well, i'd much rather be running The Beast or The Grizzly than a random 10km road race. Names mean something, even if just for the people running them.
