its top tastic,
just can't believe how many miserable bastaards there are out there, moaning about their tax. Clearly they have no passion or idea about sport and the way it makes lives.
I say we sell them, or just give them to France where they will be at homw with miserable moaning gits!!
Chircac, suck on that tasty haggis!!!

Well, I'm not so sure. It is a "recognised" sport (i.e. the IOF subscribes to the Olympic ideals and out of competition drug testing). I think that we could reasonably attempt to get at least a park race in Victoria Park (Thanks Graeme) as a demo event. It might happen!

Maybe...

yes, but the most likely thought process will run along the lines of "does it look good on tv?" and "will it attract lots of sponsors to bring some money in?". orienteering's not likely to do well on that criteria - more likely to be something like waterskiing or some such (which if my memory is correct was the only over non-olympic sport to be getting lottery funding)

Fantastic news - seems like London were always ahead of Paris in the voting from the lastest on the BBC site. Saw the final presentation video they gave - very clever and very well done. and why not push to get orienteering involved in some way? - it's a bigger sport in the UK than any of the other recent Olympics venues. There must be plenty of venues suitable for a park/sprint race nearby - maybe even the new Olympic village and surroundings?
people moan when the services aren't good enough, yet they moan when they have to pay higher taxes as well...

I have half a suspicion that the host nation has some discretion over what demonstration sports are included - does anyone know if that is the case - and do demonstration sports have to have the required number of member countries (60 is it?)

Yep, great news. The media is going to be full of it for quite a while. Mrs H is right about apathy vs funding. So, now we have the government drive to get people active, to bridge links between schools and clubs, and the planning for Olympic London.....
Are you all ready to put extra effort into selling your club and the SPORT of Orienteering. It is up to us all to get this going... don't just assume it is BOF who should be doing it.
Also, don't be feeling good about things just because you get half a dozen new members. We need 6000 to begin with....

If synchronised swimming has been allowed in, all sports should be in with a chance. Time for a delegation from BOF to persuade London 2012 to demo orienteering (making the most of international success stories)?
Plus, much could be made of the 'free' (ie no permanent stadium) use of tourist-friendly 'Royal Parks', and stress the 'have-a-go' element before and after the events (as at the Surrey 5-O)...
Great news. The tax issue will surely be minimal. The govt will gain from the tax revenue from construction companies and the tourist pound anyway. Just no more domes... everything should have a purpose after the games as well as during it!
