I don't think you should assume that a more complex and accurate scheme is necessarily better. For example, under the new ranking scheme, your points can be changed by the later publication of an earlier event's results - including one which you didn't take part in. This might be fair, but it's certainly confusing. How do you know when the number of points you've got is the final value?

Apart from the new junior classes, I would say that the badge system is very easy to understand compared to the calculation of ranking points.
