The orienteering is only OK like Toni said but you do benefit from having a good number of fairly decent mapped areas within long-run distance of the uni, beacon hill, bradgate park, switherland, outwoods. Dids and Rob Baker used to do long runs through all of them. Plus the training with the XC club and/or Charnwood AC is ace (if you can keep up!), great sports facilities and funding for sports clubs. AND you can join NOC the best club in the world! (obviously Clyde being the best small club!)
The thing about having 25 members to get funding can probably be fudged, if you sit at the sports freshers fair and get more than 25 to leave their email address etc that probably counts and you could restart the club. They might not have to be paid up/active members. In any case it would be easy to introduce new people to the sport with so many close by maps.

I too have maybe been slightly negative by suggesting you join or at least get in touch with NOC. The local club is actually LEI.

Therefore, I would recommend NOC.

Apart from the fact that the local club is LEI, NOC is a really good club and a lot of NOC-ers live in West Bridgford which is only 14 miles up the road.

Another opportunity which was always open to Nottm and Lboro student orienteers was to go training with the East Midland junior squad. You would need to get in touch with the squad coaches but I'm sure they continue to welcome older juniors for training/control hanging/coaching on weekends away and training days.

sorry for not identifying myself beforehand- never been on here before mum told me to do it to see if there was any interest. i went for john phillips as 2nd choice. wanting to study criminology. definately think we should start an o club tho... plus i can drive!!!

Telford is right in the middle of student village so has a pretty good spirit - also within 20m-100m of the gym! I don't know much about John Phillips as I was a subbie in the village at Rutherford. I've been teaching on the Sports Science degree and work in SSES but sadly won't be teaching you as I leave that job in september for a post at another uni! (although I'll still live in Loughborough)

It's good know there's lots of o-ing around loughborough and people willing to give lifts. I was a bit worried about it. My insurance chioce is edinburgh cos of the great o-ing there.

Loughborough was my 2nd choice last year to sheffield, one of the main reasons for this was because of the lack of an O'club. however, since gettign to uni, I have found that it is relatively easy to start a club up your self if you have a few interested people, and even so, most areas have peopel who are willing to give lifts / be training partners so if choosing again, I wouldn't use an orienteering team as a criteria, but I suppose this would be your own preference

Yeah my favourite was always to get dropped off somewhere near Newton Linford (Other side of Bradgate) and run through all the mapped areas - Bradgate, Broombrigs, Beacon Hill, Outwoods, Jubilee Woods and back to home/through the uni.

Also the permissive path from the Outwoods to the top of the Beacon is spectacular - especially the open ridge! (even when its raining!)

I agree - Bradgate Park is a great open area. Bagworth Woods is an area with much potential - it's part of the 'National Forest', and there are loads of small trees there, packed in tightly, but given time to mature, it'll be great. Oh, and my mum lives half a mile away. Plus LEI do a very well-organised summer league.

Agree, it is a great area to run. When visiting family in Newtown Linford always look forward to running through Bradgate Park to Breacon Hill and then through the woods in between.
