but what if you did lose your map say two controls from the end but had already planned your routes and could map memory it to the finish... should you then be dsq-ed?

err no cos it doesn't break:

7.2.4 Individual competitors shall not intentionally run with, or behind, other competitors in order to profit from their skill.

if you can run your course map memory you should probably get a medal for effort.

what are the IOF rules?

26.2 In an individual interval start race, competitors are expected to navigate and run
through the terrain independently.
26.3 Except in the case of an accident, obtaining assistance from other runners or
providing assistance to other competitors during a competition is forbidden...

so according to a fundamentalist reading of the IOF rules, both Scott and Oli should be disqualified - Scott for obtaining the assistance, and Oli for giving it (or at least failing to lamp Scott to stop him obtaining it)

never managed to actually lose a map while orienteering - although I've managed to get separated by a couple of hundred metres from the map before I realised it was gone...

But I bet you went back to find it, rather than attaching yourself to someone else on your course and following?

er, yes - I'd count it as lost otherwise, rather than just temporarily mislaid

acutually thinking about it, there are a few more DSQ's which could have happened. People corssing tapes at spectator control, people going through OOB on the wat to #1, and people not being at a University... but i think we want to have atleast 1 team competative...

happened about 2km from the end. (admit that i couldn't have done it on map memory but planned most of the legs early in the course)
Said to Stefan my team mate who i was running with jobby i lost it. he told me to carry run with him. (not oli). that i did.
i said to the download i finished without a map. If i'm disqualified then i'm disqualified. i thought i'd rather finish the course than not, i have to admit i wasn't thinking at the time and now reflect on it as a bad thing. i shouldv'e just retired.
I was in 3rd when i lost it, that is my run. and i think oli could probably say that i wasn't following, because i wasn't!
Maybe if my previous results show that this was an unusually good result then yes you could put it down to following.

But how can you say you weren't following oli when you didn't have a map? I understand that from all your previous results then you'd be expected to do pretty well but you can't have navigated if you didn't have a map. You must have followed?

From a spectator point of view, how much did it affect the overall results in reality? Yeah maybe a few of the podium places may have altered, but SHUOC still won BUSA overall.

It wasn't a selection race for the world students either, so it again doesn't really matter.

The whole point of BUSA is to have a laugh and enjoy yourself, and not to get bogged down in the bitchyness.

If this is indeed true, then you must have been following somebody when you lost your map!! anybody that doesnt realise that they have lost there map after a few hundred metres must not have been using it anyway...

Can't say i agree with guest - even an orienteer of my limited ability might have it in my mind to run as fast as i can until I hit a certain big feature and may not lookat the map - is that not the way you're meant to do it - in some terrain at least. i remember young Neville losing his map years ago on a yellow or orange course. He said he could remember where the controls were going to be so just carried on - we thought it a rather fine achievement at the time.

Have to say If I was running the same course as Scotia and he lost his map and was following me - I'd give him my map and attmpt to hang on to his coat tails

i can say i wasn't following oli because i was running with my team mate stefan andersson. and i wasnt following anyone when i lost my map. it was longish easy leg and running in a pack when i lost it. no need to look at map...
anyway i wasn't thinking i shouldve retired.

Surely losing your map is a handicap more than anything? You can''t run any faster than the person you are running with and if they are running wayward then you can do nothing about it!

- when was the last time you finished a course without a map? have you ever 'lost' a map while orienteering?

i've been orienteering for about 18years. its never happened to me.

Swiss 5-Day 1980 on Grindelwald. A true epic, including a cable car to the start, train back down to the car park and running in snow in July. I got to a small ravine and decided the quickest way across was on two fallen tree trunks. Got half way across on hands and knees before putting my palm on a sharp spike. My scream of pain meant that the map that had been in my mouth floated gently down into the swollen river and disappeared downstream never to be seen again. So it can be done....

I have lost a shoe, which is more drastic than a map. Ran through a marsh and bye bye Twisters left shoe.
