Hmm. Tricky to have a truly fair solution here.

One option is to have an unlimited amount of time removed and two maps. Creating in effect two separate races, with your choice of rest in between. The problem here is that you could just hang around until a tow appears and stick to them for the rest of your race.

Or you give a fixed amount of time, say 2 minutes, to everyone (again with two maps). That would simply freeze the race and then restart it. But - how will people know when the two minutes have elapsed? There are sure to be some people who'd forget to press their watch, or who don't carry one. And would you disqualify someone who started too soon, because they almost caught up a competitor?

In any case letting people keep their map while crossing does indeed seem like a bad idea that could relatively easily be prevented.
