M55L (C34) also had a similar route choice leg, 5-6, which I ran fairly straight while a club mate took the track option - I was only 16s quicker. The following leg again had a similar route choice decision which I ran straight but executed poorly and had to relocate. Again my club mate took the safer track option (I had considered it but got pulled onto the straight route by an "elephant track") This time he was 45s quicker. Although the day 5 courses and forest were much maligned it did at least give us some genuine route choice decisions, very much the essence of long courses. Very pleasant though the other days were they were in many cases merely long "middle" distance courses. (Except day 3 which was supposed to be middle distance!) Oh for some legs like the WOC athletes had on their long courses. Perhaps in future the 6 day should have more of a mix of middle distance courses, both in terms of distance and planning style and genuine long courses.
