"The final details stated, and the map shows, that it is the actual ROAD that is out of bounds. The rough open wide 'verge' is clearly in bounds. Seeing how exceptionally rough some of it was, it was common sense to run on the 'mown' edge. There were many competitors using this route also."
Oh dear - apparent ambiguity again (not having been at event in question). OOB roads all too often seem to offer such dilemmas - as can fields alongside woodland on occasion, or SSSI marshes. If there is a good reason for OOB (safety, access sensitivity, Natural England) then can we try to reduce the scope for interpretation when setting out purple cross-hatching or crosses? Not sure what is worse - thinking one has inadvertently gone OOB (as happened to me at a recent urban event - turned out I hadn't) - or choosing not to use a route because it looked OOB only to find others were using it and saving time from doing so.

I wasn't there and haven't seen the map, but a previous post makes it clear this was not marked as OOB, but as a forbidden route. Clearly that is the road that is forbidden, not the grass verge, so no ambiguity and no transgression deliberate or inadvertant.

I was there on Sunday. An excellent and imaginative map and area. There's no OOB marking of any sort on my map, and my course crosses the road. So that's not ambiguous.
I guess what's being referred to is Saturday (I wasn't there). Forbidden route is a helpful and unambiguous symbol to use - it would mean the road only. I *think* you're allowed to (carefully) cross a forbidden route, I've certainly had to in the past. Does anyone know?
