I think this clash is a real shame - we quite possibly would have done both given the chance, but will be going to the Lakes.
I live 260 miles from the Lakes and 275 Miles from St Ives (understand probably in the minority of being equally positioned!) and enjoy both lakes terrain and sanddunes. Actually i probably marginally prefer sanddunes, but for me it was the urban race inclusion in Cornwall that made the decision to go the Lakes easy. Two days in terrain (or a decent sprint race) over one and an urban every time! (although as i say, may have gone to both given the chance.)

Could still do with more entries - a double w/e like this deserves more than the 400 or so we currently have ready to do battle in the Lakes.![]()
At least 406 in the Lakes is better than the 344 going to the Southern Champs at Penhale, which is very disappointing. And it's not the Lakes event that is taking them away (only about 15 of the entrants for the Lakes event are from Southern Clubs; the vast majority are from NW, YHOA, NE and SOA).
Perhaps the large numbers of people in the southern clubs have just decided that with the JK just gone, and the Britsh Sprints, Middle and Long all coming within a month, a trip all the way down to Penhale for a Southern Champs is just too much?

Re: Lakeland Spring Weekend
Precisely - and if you factor in the BOC weekend as well that would be 4 weekends away in six weeks. It's just too much travelling and too expensive to do the lot so you have to choose. We've chosen the JK and the sprints and middles - if St Ives had been a bit later on (with the chance of warmer weather) we'd have gone and made a week of it

Jeeper s- disappointing, you are not kidding. There were over 1200 entrants when I organised the Southern Champsin in 2009 (was Interland too I suppose) but that is low numbers for a major event and it is a great area/map to run on.

Re: Lakeland Spring Weekend
Using Graythwaite as an excuse for a week's walking (well, 5 days anyway) in the Lakes, with Borderliner's Burnbank event for starters. That's a level B with 224 entries, though disappointingly both Black and Brown are non-quorate with only 6 runners each.
LOC and Warrior midweek evening events will also probably get a visit.

...and there's also the Loughrigg Fell Race at 7pm on Wednesday 10th from Ambleside!
I know of a couple of potential Black EODs at Burnbanks (I'm teeming that up with Coledale Horseshoe fell race tomorrow - an English champs race last year. There's also Old Dungeon Ghyll tomorrow for those who want a shorter fell race)

WCOC also have a fell orienteering evening event on Thursday next week at Fangs Brow near Loweswater, and a Causey Pike fell event on the following Thursday. Routes and details on website http://www.wcoc.co.uk

Re: Lakeland Spring Weekend
Does the lack of numbers up north & down south mean that everyone is coming to the Chasers weekend - Saturday urban on the outskirts of Stafford & Sunday "colour coded" just south of Cannock? Do I need to print more maps

Pity about the clash. We'd have loved to have done Penhale (prime O terrain)/St Ives but Graythwaite was just a bit more convenient in several respects.

I see entries have now reached 1008 in total Day 1 546 Day 2 621 at close
Possibly the slowest Orienteer in the NE but maybe above average at 114kg

Does anyone know how far it is to the start on Saturday? A 45 minute walk could mean two very different things to an M21 and a W75.

Thanks for 2 great events. You said Graythwaite would be tough, and it was, but enjoyed it anyway.

Extreme orienteering - really physically tough and uncompromising technical navigation - the ultimate test. Congratulations to all those who put themselves on the start line.

And the weather? Forecast suggested 90mph gusts on the tops - it was hard enough running into 30mph here in the east. Relieved my weekend in the Lakes is in a week's time - even if I've missed the true navigational challenge ...

Seconded - really technical all the way.
Went with the objective of trying to get the nav right and anything else as a bonus, and pleased with the outcome. Found it impossible to move fast through the thicker green and stay focussed on direction and spotting the controls, but expected that. Delighted to have survived the weekend without getting completely lost even once.
