Will the ongoing forest and moorland fires affect events?

Does anyone know if trees survive a typical forest fire? If so, and the fire clears brambles and brashings, maybe they aren't so bad after all. Mind you, I've run on Ash Ranges not long after a heather fire/clearance and the smell was awful.

chinese lanterns (a menace - please don't use them)

came across quite a few of them littering Anagach at the weekend. They didnt seem to be decomposing very quickly and had a wire loop around the bottom which looked like a pretty good rabbit/deer/orienteer trap.

I've found two of them very recently - one of them on my little hillside paddock which borders directly onto the hills and the other on the disused railway line where we occasionally jog. The head of the hills authority mentioned them this week in his regular column in the Malvern Gazette saying they are a real threat and not to use them.

Foud one in Breakneck Bank (plug for Sun 19 June) on a planning trip 3 weeks ago. I removed and disposed of it.

That's 3 fires put out by orienteers on this thread. It seems to me that orienteering should be encouraged in tinder dry times.

In Australia, a country far more prone to fires than here, they introduce total fire bans, not exclusion zones. The penalties for any naked flame are massive. Mind yo at barbecue sites they provide free enclosed gas cookers so that people can still barbeque without any naked flame. Somehow that is unimaginable in this country.

I suspect Eddie may have misunderstood me. It was a Chinese Lantern I found, not a fire.

I've just spent a day in Star Posts and can confirm that the fires did not affect the area at all. Only one small part was burnt and, as that only got the ground vegetation in an area of run, the map won't change at all.

The damage was in what we call Crowthorne Woods, most of which was silver birch or thick conifer regrowth after felling, so will probably improve the area!
