The snow has disappeared from Holyrood Park and the ice has disappeared from the streets of Edinburgh. And the city is getting ready to be a top class orienteering area for the big weekend.
The Saturday city race is now confirmed as the first event of two major orienteering series competitions. The MASTERS CUP where the Edinburgh city race will be the inaugural event of the whole competition. Also the premier urban league in Britain the NOPESPORT URBAN LEAUGE. The city race will this year be using a newly mapped area of the city and the courses, courtesy of planner Jegor Koystlev (Russian International Orienteer), are the best I have ever seen for this event.
The Sunday holyrood park sosol will be as always a technical and physical challenge. Letting competitors shack off some of that winter orienteering rustiness and get back prepared for what 2011 will have to throw at them.
Also, it can’t be forgotten that on Saturday night there will be a celidh. Where prizes from the day’s competition will be presented and you can dance the night away.
Well it's not long to go now!! Make sure you have those entries in on oentries for what is going to be a fabulous weekend of orienteering and socialising in the beautiful city of Edinburgh.
Due to INT's Dechmont Law event being cancelled due to snow in December, it has now been confirmed that EUOC's Holyrood Park SoSOL on the Sunday will be the East of Scotland Orienteering Association Championships.
So you now have: *Saturday City Race, Nopesport Urban League including a new bit of Edinburgh map *Saturday ceilidh with the chance to meet friends as well as make new ones whilst having an early Burns celebration! *Sunday Holyrood Park SoSOL, East of Scotland Championships with the longer courses being slightly different to your average Holyrood courses!
We're looking forward to seeing all of you who have entered so far but those who haven't you've only got 4 days left to enter!!!!!
Start times will hopefully be available mid week. As a rule we try to make sure all information is out by Thursday (if not earlier) for anyone travelling up Friday. Any problems (i.e. needing to know particularly early) let Alasdair know at captain"at"euoclegends.co.uk
There will be tents available at registration for shelter. You are welcome to use the facilities at Dynamic Earth but please don't wear muddy kit in there and be aware that a lot of the public may also be using it. There are also very nice cafe facilities in Dynamic Earth if you fancy a sit down there. Dynamic Earth is a 2 minute walk from registration.
If you haven't managed to pre enter on oentries but are still coming do give Alasdair a shout at captain"at"euoclegends.co.uk - we are ordering spare maps and can give you a start time so if travelling in then you won't be waiting around for too long Though if you EOD, the 2.5hr start block is getting rather full on the long course so please be patient and we'll fit you in asap! (Hence easier to email Alasdair and get a time!) Only 5 days to go!
Thanks have sent email. I remain confused by the kids crossing roads legislation. Looking at the entries I see my 14 year old son who is an M16 could run the junior, short or medium course, despite only the junior one avoiding roads. Whilst I think this is sensible as his other hobbies involve hurtling down black runs on a snowboard and white water kayaking I do find it confusing. Can we just ignore the nanny BOF stuff if we want?
In the recently published 2011 Guidelines the M/W18s are in the Open class.
Have noticed that the M/W18s run a different course from the Open class at Edinburgh. Will this make League scoring difficult for those classes? (Haven't checked to see whether any M/W18s are actually running)
Why wouldn't we? With a consistently fantastic event like this every year few don't want to return. I think I enjoyed this year even more than the previous ones. The organisation and welcome is top notch.
A big thank to all those who helped make it such a good weekend of orienteering. I did the Middle course on Saturday and my only gripe was that there were too many controls where you went in and out the same way, so much easier to spot with the volume of traffic at them. Sunday was great on Arthur though being nervous of heights, I did from Green No 3 a bit scary. Dont know if there is anything in this (maybe a topic for debate) but as someone who has only started orienteering in the last 3 years and that is in the South East, I have found the few events that I have done up North (Scotland/Yorkshire) to be much more difficult! Maybe it is just not being used to the different terrain. Looking forward to next year already and thanks to Mrs H for getting the dates for us.
