actually SI uk already do attendance logging:

the '365' would be more appropriate if punches were needed outside of school

Yeah, but if you give kids an SI card for attendance logging they will use it several times every day, under supervision. It will become apparent pretty quickly if they lose it, and so most of them will probably try pretty hard not to. But I reckon if I lost my walk-to-school-scheme SI card which I only use occasionally I'd probably just keep quite about it. I think using SI would only be practical if you made people pay a cash deposit to join the scheme that they get back when they return their SI card at the end of the year - not sure whether that would put people off.

OK, serious point this time.
A school I am replacing with a new one is about to launch a "park and stride" scheme along the lines being discussed. An "Active Travel Zone" has been identified in the streets around the school, and pupils get points if they walk from outside that zone, or get dropped off outside it if they are being driven to school by parents. The scheme will be administered by teachers, and pupils will be on trust to declare if they have walked part of the way to school. It's very much low tech, with a card issued to every pupil, "prizes" will be minimal, and there is certainly no electronic punching!
The idea is good, and it doesn't have to be expensive.
PM if you want a pdf copy of the leaflet
