FRA = £12, BOF the last year we paid £400. Economic sense or what!

I believe that under the present BOF levy rules, the levy for an event with 75 people would be zero, and you would have needed 297 entrants to reach a £400 levy.

Normally we provide £1000 worth of prizes (cost to us around £400). Map preparation costs were £220 and actual production costs were also very high (many more £100s) - we had changed the event from the old days when people bought an OS map and marked it up on the day using master maps. Landowner started seeking several £100 access to College Valley. Some minimum travel costs. Needed to commit to printing maps on Tue and with just over 30 entries (no sign of usual late surge by this stage) reluctantly pulled the plug. Maybe it is back to basics in the future (if ever). I do think the competition handicaps itself by operating under FRA rules. Surely the levy is not so punishing that it could not be under BO rules. I appreciate the efforts for the Juniors but this seems a method of sidestepping levy....!!!

I've said it before in this thread -it is not the BOF Levy that caused the organisers to run this event under FRA rules but more to do with the difficulty or impossibility of applying BOF rules over many miles of moorland with limited access roads and a non-infinite number of helpers.
The associated "Junior Phoenix" is run under BOF rules because the courses are a fraction of the length and BOF rules can be applied and the Levy paid (provided there are enough competitors -and there are a significant number of adults who compete in the "Junior" event because they don't want to be out for hours in the main event for whom Levy would be required).
This is the only NATO event I can remember (and I've been around the club for over 20 years) other than bike events (under BMBO rules I think) for which BOF rules and registration are not applied
