In Norfolk we have a greeter. Normally its the club coach (also RDO) or Club chairman, but everyone helps people if they ask, easpecially those who look totally confused.
If only we'd have had someone explain to us at our first event what the random colours on a map meant and what we were meant to be doing.

Re: Written descriptions (M50+ only)
When I started, having been used to fellwalking etc for many years with OS maps my biggest problem was in getting used to white = woods. i lost count of the time I got confused in the right place because I was expecting open.
As for unisual description, how about :
tree junction, on top of -it was about 8 ft up
climbing net, underneath (look up)
rabbit hole, middle
- all in one event

KP I always make a point of telling newbies to think about the amount of sunshine falling on the ground - yellow means its short grass - dark green means nothing not even light gets through etc, and I also mention that white means runnable forest because that is what it's like in large parts of Scandi where orienteering began so it saves a lot of ink (for the Scandis) it seems to help them understand what would otherwise be a counter intuitive feature of O maps.

When I make a mistake regarding veg changes (i.e. Cooksworthy M21L #24?) I still manage to convince myself that even though I'm stood on rough open ground I'm actually on a nice white bit of map...

Did Pingu plan the event

Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.
