It's a bit sad when people are stating how many controls you need per event. If I need more controls than our club has, I will borrow some from elsewhere - I will not reduce controls for the sake of it.
Having said that planning will always require several compromises which are (when I am working) the main differentiators between levels of event - I compromise most with standard old fashioned C4's and least at level 1. I do have the advantage that the areas I plan can have at least the vast majority of controls out well in advance (sometimes the week before).
I think I plan good courses, but God forbid that everyone planned my way or we'd simply run the same legs again and again.
