The issue for me though is looking through those splits, at 26 for instance they had a joint 30s+ miss on a 2 minute leg, which implies more running together (or even dare I say it "following") than running your own race making use of the other person being there.

To be fair, the tracking suggests that Lakanen made minor errors on 24-25-26 and lost Gonon, only to rejoin him close to each control.

Of course, the tracking could be wrong.

I was referring to Losman and Khramov

Anyway I can't see tracking for Lakanen or Gonon (or Losman/Khramov) on the Replay (can't get it at all on the network in work). I only seem to have a 'Default Group' of 18 (has Khramov, but seemingly no data for him). How do I see the rest?

Last year lauenstein was caught by khramov when he was lying in only 22nd place, "ran together" with khramov, and came 2nd.

Some may have assumed, and some even said that both khramov and lauenstein benefited from running together for most of the course, and one even did statistical analysis as graeme has just reminded The implicit corollary to such a suggestion is that lauenstein would not necessarily have come 2nd if he had not been starting 2 minutes ahead of khramov.

This year, of mild interest was the fact that he came 2nd again but this time without being caught by khramov, and I think he was alone apart from 25 minutes when he was running with jon duncan, therefore less open to "possible" claims of only getting a silver due to running in a pack.

I do hope that my efforts into putting it into non-facetious language helps your understanding.

It looks like lauenstein and jon duncan finished the butterfly loops within a second of each other and then split up - could someone confirm this (I'm just interested due to having nothing better to do obviously).

he got caught from olle this year in the beginning of the course, but could run away...maybe thats the secret of lauenstein, get caught and freak out...
