As for the entry fee, how many of you know this? BOF levy this year at most events is £1 a run. For BOC we had to have a budget with a certain profit. The level of profit required equated to a levy of over £5 a run. That accounts for quite a bit of the higher entry fee.

But why should BoF be making a Profit from orienteers and the British Orienteering Championships? Orienteering events should be aiming to break even, not line the pockets of this non-essential organisation. And do they put the money back into the Sport generally, or mainly to International endevours? It will be interesting to see the accounts.

My apologies to DJM - for knocking into him in the changeover scrum. I had totally failed to see my second leg runner and was rushing to get to the line.

Maybe a 50m wide line facing the run-in would have helped to avoid the scrums that built up on Sunday?

I have to disagree that this is a "non-essential organisation": it may not always do what, or work as, we'd like, but IMHO it's essential there's an NGB, and comparing ourselves with other sports, I think we have a quite good NGB in general.

I really enjoyed the BOC individual race - thanks to the planner including lots of long legs which offered ample route choice. I felt like I was navigating to get somewhere - not being forced to visit another depression/ditch etc. where I already was.

I have one query regarding course 24 which was shared by M14A, M16B and W16A. I assumed M14A and M16B would be running TD4 and W16A would run a TD5 but shorter than the M16A's TD5, so was course 24 TD4 or TD5?

One further point - did anyone find the purple course overprint ran in the rain? Mine did, although not badly enough to obscure the map detail. This has never happened on any other waterproof maps I have used so I wondered if a different process or different inks were used for the BOC maps.

I suspect it is hard to get a TD5 leg on those areas.

It doesn't. Orienteers contribute just over half a million of BOF's expenditure of well over one million.

Most events are club run activities. To that end, they are fully justified in making a surplus to invest in, for example, future events or other orienteering activity.

Evidence? And who specifically are you referring to? (I'd also dispute your description of non-essential, but that's already been addressed).

Well, that's me told. I have to hide my diminished head. Oh hang on, wait a minute. Because it isn't really the British Long Distance Championships. The Long bit was just added to differentiate from the other, newer, Championships, Middle and Sprint. But as far as I am concerned the event I attended this last weekend was the British Champs. Don't take my word for it - the website (and the URL) for BOC 2013 and the text within all refer to the British Orienteering Champs. Not much about long distance there!

BOC2013 has been in discussion with the printers and they have gone to their supplier
to discuss this problem. At first the thought was that the ink may not have dried
properly but it is still smudging today. Hopefully we (BOC2013 and the printer) will
get an explanation and I will then try and remember to pass it on.
The problem was as disappointing to us (BOC2013 organisers) as it was annoying
and frustrating to you the competitors

as far as I am concerned the event I attended this last weekend was the British Champs.

doesn't matter whether you call it BOC or BLDC, if you ran the short course you weren't in a Championship race

there's nothing wrong with running S courses - i have fragile knees (and i'm old, fat and crap too) and have often run short at the JK or SOC, but i don't delude myself that winning these courses makes you champion of anything, and if all the S classes had been lumped together into (say) Blue, Short Blue and Green I'd've been happy running one of them against folk from a range of other age groups

The vast majority of people are not up to M21E, with a winning time of 90 minutes.

I want to move back to 1997, where at the British there were 26 running M21E, (won by Jamie Stevenson in 90 minutes) M21L had 141 finishers and M21S had 102 finishers. In them days the vast majority of M21s were not made to feel inadequate, second class citizens if they were not up to elite. And yes, there were prizes for M21L and M21S.

How about going back to the mid 1980s when there were 100+ on Men21elite and 100+ on long and short.

If a Championship course in any class is open for all to run by virtue of their age, sex or whatever, then this is the only course with any championship validity. Other courses are for those who elect not to participate (their choice). If however the field is restricted, which used to be the case with Elite courses when I did them in the 70s and 80s, then other courses, such as M21L acquire, 'championship' status, because the participants are not allowed to run the Championship course.

I don't remember there ever being 100 on 21E - there was always a quota and if you were injured/abroad the previous year, you were stuffed.
At my first BOC I got downgraded onto M21C, because the B course was full .
And quite a lot of people were up for M21E when it didn't clash with BOC
