Incidentally, can anyone from EAOA tell us why we haven't had a major event on Pretty Corner/Beeston Regis/Felbrigg for some time?

Much has been said about travel distances and cost. It is the same in either direction and many NOR members on the east side of the EA region rarely get out of their area.

However NOR has a number of smallish technical areas on the North Norfolk coast, together with other small quality privately owned inland areas, which individually like Felbrigg do provide excellent Level C orienteering when used on a rotation basis. When used regularly in a full club fixture list with leagues, handicap competitions etc does keep local members extremely happy.

Unfortunately however non orienteering restraints that exist now, mean it is unlikely that the areas mentioned by Homer could ever be linked together again.

It sounds as though EA may have the terrain to host a good British middle and sprint championship weekend in the future. In fact I am sure you have. If you feel you can't do the longer ones maybe this is a way to go.

2 days at JK 86 were at Brandon - actually quite a good area before FC pretty much clear felled the area west of the Brandon/Eleveden road and reserved the complex pitted area to the east for Mountain Bikers. The assemby area sported a couple of concrete bases which attracted a nest of vipers in the Spring sunshie that had to be taped off.

I planned some suggested courses for the JK training day that year (only the second event I ever planned !) and we had over 1,000 entries (at £ 1 a head) - more than most events nowadays. I also remember the vast latrine pits Bob Last dug for us - shame they were used for that purpose as otherwise they would have made cracking features in an otherwise bland part of Risbeth.

Wise old head on Eddie's shoulders. Even though it was too far to him to travel he has obviously spotted on routegadget that the club's Midland course planner has skillfully got courses round a a relatively small area using middle distance course planning techniques. Assisted no doubt with help from a Controller from LOC, but ex NOR, who successfully planned last year's British Middle Distance Championships.

Unfortunately many of the comments on this thread are still not very convincing that people will be prepared to travel, so I suspect most future NOR events will still remain as well planned Level C club events. At least EAOA clubs will benefit.

Anyone who has been to lots of NOR events over the years will realise that their planning style has always been one of many shortish legs - you certainly get plenty of dibs for your your dollar. Combine that with good maps, consistently efficient organisation and a very friendly welcome makes their events always worth the visit. This coming from a Suffolk boy bred to "distrust" anything from north of the border is his praise indeed.
